I haven't been to Shanghai but have been to China a few times. Love the place. There is a gorgeous little town outside of Shanghai I have always wanted to see - is a canal town.
Then there is the opy to jump a flight to Xi'an if there is anything avail and the weather sucks.

I have visited Suzhou, a water town near Shanghai, it is a lovely town, well worth a visit. It is at times peaceful and tranquil and also crazy and chaotic - all within a small area easily covered on foot.
