Storms in BNE tonight (Mon 8 Oct)

Well I made it to my plane dead last as I was drinking with LW. Just made it.

Worst flight ever. Dash 8 to MKY and spent half 3/4 of the flight with the belt light on and heaps of turbulance. Not that it worries us glider pilots, we look for turbulance (best thermals). They even had to stop the in flight service and didn't get to finish it.

Longest 2 hours of my life to date.

Didn't think I'd get home after all the afternoon storms hanging around and when I heard thunder in Rocky this morning I thought I'd be stuck.

Anyway I'm finally back in BNE (got the 1520 out of Rocky).

There's no place like home.

I have had a bad run this week with trips to Cairns, Hervey Bay, Mackay and Rockhampton... all day trips, all gettting back into BNE after 6pm.....
I thought that my trip from HVB on Wednesday night was bad due to the storms over the Sunshine Coast but last nights trip was WWAAAAAYYY worse.
The incoming flight had numerous people vomiting and thus they had a delay whilst the FA's and local crew tried to clean the mess up.
There was a changing of seats to accomadate the mess, and when we took off about an hour late, we were advised it was going to be a bumpy ride.
Bit of an understatement....

Good thing they refreshed the supply of sick bags. Multiple people using them and a quite a few screams as the Dash 8 lurched around for a good hour.

I do have to give

to the two young (under 25) FA's who handled everything with aplomb, and were constantly reasurring pax that this was all normal and nothing to be worried about.

I am more than happy to wait for a plane if it means a smoother ride....

Inclement weather is once again causing problems at Brisbane tonight, almost exclusively just for arriving flights.

One Virgin Blue flight is currently circling the Toowoomba area and the other the Gold Coast area. Various flights have been delayed.

As you can see, a number of QF/JQ services have diverted to OOL:

I am in Brisbane at the moment (Springwood, 15 min from the airport) .... great lightning show once again tonight, but it seems to have moved off now.. can't see any approaching a/c though!

I Was on QF548 last night, ( and early this morning )

It was certainly the longest time on a plane from SYD -BNE that i have ever had,

I must say though,

The QF cabin staff did a great job it what was trying times.

But i do question why we left SYD at all, i suspect so we did not breach the curfew, ( if we had not left we might not have left before curfew is what i mean) and then it would have been hotel rooms all round i guess ??
But you would think that the pilots would have know what the weather was doing in BNE before leaving the gate in SYD.

Anyhow so after flying in cirlces for about 1 hour, we diverted to the G/C.

There was, at one stage, at least 9 jets on the ground in coolangatta, with only 1 ground engineer ! he was one busy fellow.
We sat on the taxi way for around an hour or so, with engines running , before we could get a spot to refuel,

There was discussion going around regarding the pilots and their "time on duty" aparrently it was pretty close to needing a new crew. But that is just what i heard from another PAX.

In the end we did not land in BNE until 00.20 (fri) so it was a LONG day, specialy seeing i was up at 5am for a flight SYD - Albury yesterday morning.

anyhow, i only just got to work this morning, as a sleep in was very much needed !!

I hope thats my last problem like that for a while.

A friend-of-a-friend works as a Jetstar hostie. She regularly does the OOL-SYD run and the curfew is very strict. They recently were running late and approached SYD at 3 minutes into the curfew and HO ordered them back to Qld..

Wouldn't have surprised me at all - work near the City and there was lots of thunder but no lightning. The clouds north (near the airport) looked a lot worse.

That's about 15kms directly east from the airport...and only about 4kms from my home. Better ring the wife and see how the house and dogs are

This would have been worked out by the airline from a business perspective and the pilots from an flying perspective. The airline would be considering the hotel etc costs and the pilots considering if they could actually get to BNE.

But you would think that the pilots would have know what the weather was doing in BNE before leaving the gate in SYD.

The pilots would have had the weather forecasts which then help them with their decision making process, however that's all the forecast does. It helps :!: From the forecast they would see that they would need holding fuel and/or fuel to divert to a suitable alternate. It doesn't say yes you can or no you can't land at BNE.
They would not have left SYD without a reasonable expectation of being able to land at BNE or they would not have left at all.

Interesting though both, the cabin crew and the pilots, made refference to the recent accident in Indonesia.

I was very glad we did not try to land into BNE during the storm, Sliding sideways down the runway in the rain, does nothing for me at all !! :mrgreen:

Well, it's pretty poor weather up here today and after last night's storms, the weather bureau is prempting the storms by issuing a Severe Storm Warning.

Although no severe thunderstorms are currently visible on radar over southeast Queensland, they are still expected to form in inland parts of the warning area over the next several hours.

Damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are possible.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Laidley, Gatton, Toowoomba, Esk, Dalby and Kingaroy.

Could make for an interesting afternoon as they move toward BNE.

There were also some pretty bad storms last night that caused some local flooding around Brisbane. We had some sails torn to shreds with a big front about 11pm and the rain was blowing horizontally for a good hour. Good thing was we received 54mm of rain so all the tanks are full and it's back to 8min showers for at least the next week while all the city-slickers stick with their four minute times showers.

Incidentally, I was checking the effect on any of the midnight departures to Asia and noted that Air NZ had an inbound flight due at 3ish (am) from ROK?? Flight number was NZ 6035.
