Hi,
Hubby is currently a Qantas Gold FF which expires 30/11/10 and he currently needs 220 status credits to keep his Gold. He was just short last year and Qantas renewed it anyway, don't think he will be so lucky this year.
Can anybody suggest the best way to accumulate the status credits? We live in Karratha WA
thanks

The best idea from WA I think would be to book a JASA (Business class Any Seat Award) as it’ll earn points and SC’s at the J rate, and if you’re lucky not cost too much more than a classic award, which is far cheaper than buying a ticket, however he’ll need a healthy point balance to begin with.

You'll know in about 7 weeks if Qantas intend to 'comp' him gold into next year.

A letter is generally sent out around 8 weeks beforehand. If comped, there'll be a new card as well.

That is not always the case of course, as we have discussed before, its quite possible you wont know until the week after its meant to roll over, when the status does not change, of course thats too late to do anything about it. JASA close to the anniversary date would seem to be the course of action.

220 SC's are still a fair way to go.
I guess a question could be asked, would he be better falling back to PS and then purchase a QP membership? Whilst he would miss out on the bonus points that gold gives the $$$ saving on wasted flights would probably make up for that (use the saved $$$ to purchase some J flights instead), and he'd still have lounge access on QF \ BA \ AA.

True. If he was comped last year, surely he's not travelling enough to make proper use of the status anyway.

Some things vary, but I did use the word generally.

By far the majority of reports indicate the 8 week letter.

8 weeks before 30/11 is more than 3 weeks away - more like 5-6 weeks.

Someone who has 400SCs would be able to make the use of the Gold benefits quite well I would have thought, thats at least 10 round trips to BNE ex KTA direct in discount Y (yuck), and dont forget the additional mileage, on that same leg and frequency you would get another 12K of points for being Gold (thats close to being worth 100SCs in JASA land).

I was comp'd last year for SG sitting on 120SCs, this year I am close to 2000SCs, travel does vary from time to time, and neither year has had international travel included in my case. As always its up to the individual to determine if its worth the effort, although Qantas does tend to incent things by adding the extra SC tax if you dont make it.

I don’t doubt he could have used the Gold membership adequately, poor choice of words, but perhaps striving for re-qualification is not the best course of action, when a QP membership could be bought for less.

If you do get comped in this way then you should know by looking at your account ~8 weeks before reassessment if you have been comped rather than waiting for the letter to arrive.

Thanks for all the suggestions lots to think about. In the last week hubby's employer booked him a flight KTA to Brisbane then return was via Perth all on K class (I think) and luckily now only has 110 status credits to gain. This week KTA to PTH return K class so only another 50 SC to get before end of november, looking very achievable with not much effort. Thanks Again
