Hi all,

I'm in the US at the moment and I recently hit WP. My anniversary date was the 30th Nov and I had a bit more time in the US so I was looking for ways to earn some quick SCs for my new membership year before heading home. I recently flew BOS-DFW-SAT, and the cost of an instant upgrade fare was about 2x the Y fare for 180 SCs all up, so I thought "what the hell" and took it. Now, here's where it gets sticky...

From past experience, I noticed that SCs earned on AA flights take about 24-48 hours to post. I was travelling on Nov 30th and my thinking was that my SCs would post on 1st Dec and therefore count to my new year. So far, only my BOS-DFW credits have posted but my activity statement looks like this:

My first thought was "I wonder what the hell that little symbol next to those SCs means?"

My summary shows a SC balance of 0 SCs for the new membership year. So this means my BOS-DFW credits were processed on 1st Dec, but they've been credited to my old membership year, presumably under the logic that I flew on the last day of my old membership year and that's when they should count. Now I doubt very much that QF would be willing to see it this way if the tables were turned and I wanted SCs posted for the date flown rather than the date processed if a partner airline was slow in posting them and my FF tier hung in the balance. I've looked at the T&Cs but I can't find any information on when SCs should count: day processed or day flown? Does anybody have any experience with this? The processing date on the statement is clearly 1st Dec... reckon I'll have a shot with customer service at getting them credited to my new year instead of just vaporising in that incredibly sad "Expired Status Credits" line?

That's how it's meant to work. SC's count towards the membership year the flight was in. Otherwise you could not put your FF number on bookings then send a points claim in the following membership year (besides, plenty of airlines take much longer to credit). On the plus side it will count to your lifetime tally.

As Joshua says. SCs always apply for the year they are flown, the processing date is irrelevant.

Actually, Qantas a very good at backdating the calculation in this situation.

There are two dates in that line. The 01 Dec is the processing date, and the 30 Nov in the description is the activity date. The date used for the determination of status is the date of the eligible flight, which has to be in the membership year:

20.1.5 The travel required in each Membership Year to attain or retain Silver, Gold or Platinum status level must include a minimum of four Eligible Flight Segments where Qantas, QantasLink or a Jetstar Airline is the Marketing Carrier.

I also have a nov 30 anniversary date. Completed 2420 SCs but the final flight on nov 29 (210 SCs) only registered today. So now I guess I wait for an email offering me the usual choices. Anyone else have experience with this?

It's always the date flown. In another case it worked for someone I know who was bumped up to silver as the credits were in the prior year.

That's an interesting case because the 2400SC email says to pick your bonus by the anniversary date. You will probably need to call or email them and have it manually done. There might be little experience of this since the move from PG at 2100SC, so do post your results.

Another thing about the original question, if you receive paper statements then they don't even show the processing date. Entries are ordered by their activity date.

There is a part of the on-line site where you can see how many status bonuses you've had for the year etc. When I hit 2,400 SCs it offered me a choice. I clicked the 50,000 points button and it asked me to confirm my choice and they posted within the hour and then I spent them buying another JASA.

If this doesn't come up in the next 24 hours follow Joshua's advice and call QF WP line during the day so you get the premium staff and explain what has happened and what bonus you want. Hopefully they'll fix it up immediately.

Thanks all for the advice. Joshua, I hadn't even considered the problems for the airlines re: backdating. oz_mark, to me the T&Cs are still ambiguous, but I see your point with 20.1.5.

I guess I'll leave this one be. Earn, burn and learn :)

Just to reiterate, all anecdotal evidence (including my own) that I have come across indeed shows to Qantas base the crediting on the scheduled departure date of the eligible flight.
