For my upcoming trip LAX-SYD-AKL, QF did a schedule change and moved me to from the 10:05 pm LAX-SYD flight to the 11:50 pm LAX-SYD flight. This resulted in a busted connection on SYD-AKL where our 7:10 am flight to AKL now was unworkable. At the time, the only thing they would offer me is a 11:30 flight from SYD to AKL - resulting in our getting into AKL a good 4 hours later than we had originally planned.

There are two QF flights at 9:30 - one QF and one apparently operated by LN. Given that this was a schedule change that they created, is there an option/possibility of us standing by for the 9:30 flight?

Has QF12 been actually canceled that evening?

Given Qantas appear to have made the changes, have you explored with them if the might be possible options via
Melbourne or Brisbane?

Does the 9:30 AKL flight meet the MCT with your new flight out of LAX?

Proposed flight would be 1:35 and would involve staying airside in T1. So, I do not believe I am clearing Australian customs on this one.

I think you are talking about LA800/QF321. That flight is more unreliable than QF12 cancelling upon itself, so i would recommend picking up the 1130 service instead.

The MCT at SYD for QFi-QFi is 60 Minutes. It seems strange they moved you to the 11:30 when the 9:30am meets MCT. (I presume QF108 is schedule to arrive at 7:35am (which it does until 4th October).

Agreed...so back to the initial question, given that we were confirmed on an earlier flight and given what they offered me at the time of the schedule change, will they be inclined to let us standby for either of the 9:30 flights?

Assuming the 9:30am flight meets the MCT (we can't ascertain this as you haven't mentioned any dates), due to a schedule change from QF you are entitled to ask to be confirmed on whichever QF flight you would like. There does not need to be availability in your booked fare bucket on the flight you want.

Ring up and ask. I have found some agents to not be aware of this though, so you may need to call more than once.
