SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

anyone tried the SYD>CBR>SIN route?

need to get off the plane at CBR?
any lounge?
thinking you would be pretty sleepy and then have to get off at CBR, kill an hour or so and hope back on like a zombie?
in J

I've done CBR to SG last year. The virgin lounge here is very basic. Drinks are ok though. We are going again this April - night time flight to SG, but daytime from SG-SYD-CBR, so this time, we can enjoy the food and wine!

I flew this last night so throwing in my thoughts if it helps. It really doesn’t feel like you’re leaving Canberra at midnight. Such a short flight, time taken boarding and offloading and then the reasonably short wait seemed to mask the time. Our family all ate dinner around 8pm in Sydney, I ate again as soon as we left Canberra and then got around 5-6 hours sleep (in J which helps). MrsMac and the 2 little Macs (4yo and 6yo) slept as soon as we left Canberra until we had to change their seat back to upright, and didn’t eat again until we arrrived in Singapore. I would prefer direct but took this flight as I could get four reward seats and would do it again.

Just a redemption booking data point for those out there. I made a redemption booking on 31 December for 3 o/w J tickets - MEL to CPH. I ended up cancelling the booking on 22 January. I did it over the phone and was told 1 week for points refund and 3 weeks for taxes refund. SQ took cc details for the payment of the cancellation fee for the 3 tickets. As it happens, they only charged me for one cancellation and called me 1 week later advising they needed to charge for the other 2 cancellations. I thought this may cause some delays in points refund so held off until 2.5 weeks. Call again and told I need to wait 3 weeks for points refund unless I put in an escalation request because I need the points. Just called earlier today, 3 weeks and 6 days later as still no points. This time I was told 3-4 weeks for points refund. I displayed my disdain at the mixed messaging I have received about the refund process. The agent on the line apologies and put in an escalation for me and the points were back in the account within 2 hours. Based on this experience, I will probably always request an escalation in the future, just so I don't need to follow up but YMMV.

thanks for the heads upm
I wonder if this also applies to waitlisted flights that expire

So I want to book MEL-HKG (F) return but want to add a stopover so I can do SIN-DPS (J) return at the start of my journey. Essentially MEL-SIN-DPS then DPS-SIN-HKG then HKG-SIN-MEL.

Assuming I will get charged if I call up to book these redemption bookings, can/will Sq combine 2 return tickets/itinerary into 1 if I book these 2 journeys online?

For those who are a bit more adventurous it looks like the SYD-SIN scoot flight is being operated by an SQ charter at the moment.

Had read a thread over on FT and can confirm it’s the case today whilst I wait for 222.

Does this mean Scoot Biz will get automatically upgraded to SQ J seats with a reduced menu? :)

Question RE: Changi dedicated First check in

I'm sure I've read it somewhere but could not find it anywhere or searching wrong terms. I know you can check in with First pax if on same flight regardless of Class, however my parents will be flying R SIN-MEL and their friends flying SQ Y SIN-SYD. Will their friends be able to check in via the dedicated First check in with my parents?

I'd give it a try as long as there are only two 'friends'. As long as the flights are around the same time and the dedicated check in is not too busy. I've found the staff there quite relaxed about checking in friends and family as long as you do not have too many people or too much extra luggage. As your parents are in R, they will likely help them all. However, the friends will not be able to join your parents in the TPR but one guest each can go to the F Lounge.

Transferring MR points to a different SQ points and then the Sq account being frozen.

Anyone had success?

All I can say is, DON'T do it.

Here's what will happen:
You'll transfer from your MR account to Mrs. ninja-tim's KF account (let's say). The points will show up in her account after the usual transfer time period passes. You'll proceed to use those miles straightaway to make a booking, and then get a message saying Mrs. ninja-tim's KF account has been "placed under audit", as the names of the source (your AmEx MR account) and destination (her KF account) don't match exactly. What then ensues is your miles being frozen, and documentation having to be uploaded to prove your relationship, and then if they're feeling generous they'll refund the miles back to your AmEx MR account which takes a month or so to action.

I've been through the exact same experience and, boy, was it an ugly one. Never again am I attempting such a transfer! KF will notice the mismatch and will not hesitate to freeze your account.

Good luck!

I generally wouldnt do it either.
Imagine the stress of having your tickets cancelled but the rest of your trip still intact eg hotels.

I assume that small errors like first and middle names not matching isnt a big deal.as my legal name and commonly used name is my middle name

Thanks for the cautionary tale. I’ve done some small ‘tester’ transfers from my wife’s account at another institution to my SQ account. Points have shown.due to the expiry of points, I’ve onky transferred a small amount. I’d hate for them to freeze my account when I do the larger transfer down the track thinking it will work.

Might have to book those through my wife’s account. Will be logistically more work but better than not being able to complete my legit bookings. I’m hoping since mine were only small ones they might fly under the radar. Guess there’s no way of knowing until you book?

Well one line is the reason for this could be that Singapore Airlines simply doesn’t care .

Well at least sometimes they do as various people have reported over the years getting in trouble with SQ on doing this. Having flights cancelled etc. Others have reported it working.

So it seems to be Russian Roulette, and you just don't know the consequences till you pull the trigger. Or in this case maybe some months after when you want to fly, but find your plans ruined by SQ cancelling your tickets.

simply not worth the risk in my opinion,
if travelling solo, then if your flights get cancelled, you just rebook, pay the higher pricing and get over it

but if its with a partner or family, you inconveinece them all, and its higher pricing (multiplied)

They (Loyalty Lobby) do propose a fairly reasonable argument - SQ does get paid regardless of whose MR account is being used. However, from what I gather, the name-matching is being done to clamp down on people selling miles (as SQ doesn't have family transfers like QF or VA does), and a possible method to "sell" SQ miles is to transfer MR to the buyers' account.
Makes sense from their point of view, they want members to earn their own miles themselves, but when it comes to husband/wife situations it does seem too restricted.
However, given that any rule could be breached with "creative" account info, it is certainly open to abuse.
Hence the overlords at SQ KF head office decided that a blanket ban should be implemented.
And here we are :)
