So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Tempted as well, but they won't be here for a while, what I'd really like is a 3 door smallish proper 4x4 like the old Pajero models. The new Suzuki is just too small.
There’s a new 3 door Defender....arriving about 6 months after the 5 door.

What’s normally involved in an engine rebuild?
Pull the engine apart completely. Machine any surface that sees a moving part such as cylinder, bottom end, top end. Machine anything that has a gasket.

If the moving parts can't be replaced with slightly bigger ones - I.e. a slightly wider diameter piston rings, then sleeve or shim what has been machined to the size of the moving part.

Put it all back together with new bearings/pistons/rings/valves as required.

I have only had one engine rebuilt (2.8lt normally aspirated ForeRunner). I was offered a port'n'polish as well. I declined!
 
Thrifty at SYD this morning were struggling to get cars for all the bookings they had. Eventually was handed keys to a very new (about 2500kms on the clock) Toyota Landcruiser after about a 25 minute wait

"It depends"

As I got mates rates the rebuild was about $2,000. The full price would have approached the cost of a replacement. Maybe $3-4,000. I did the R and R myself.

When the rebuild was done I knew exactly what condition the engine was in. It was probably better than a new one.

If I had to do it again, I would do a rebuild again. The only downside is if the engine condition is so poor that machining it weakens it too much to last very long.

It was a homologation special so they could be used as the basis for the World Rally Championship in the mid nineties. There were only 7,800 made. they are starting to fetch good money. Mine came to Australia as low volume imports via Hong Kong.The car that I had in Tassie was a later rally version of this, but it is a body shell and a couple of crates of parts. I was never going to complete it. It will become a tarmac rally car.

THe basically pulled the enture engine down to replace the rings, seals etc etc. Also replaced the twin carbys for a single one as they were a pain to tune. car is sitting in a garage atm waiting for some cash to do up the interior and re-spray it.. might make it a promo company car...
 
Was a Monara GTS 327, new, in March 1969, preceded by two Cooper Ss in 1967 and 1968.
Those were when the Bathurst race was the Armstrong 500, and was a genuine touring car race.
Where were you in the sixties?
