I am currently in California trying to get back to Sydney. The only cheapish flight to Australia is on the 30th of Dec yet when I went to book it, it said it was booked out....sigh....so frustrating!

Does anyone know of any flights or airlines that have flights under $4,000??

Preferably return.

Thanks in advance.

$4k is cheap. I check regularly for flights out of LAX and most days cheapest is about $6k ranging up to $15k many days. Dread to think what the return price is.

Also I’d only be looking at non stop flights out of LAX or SFO on United, Delta or American as they will definitely be running. I’ve seen the Air Canada option via Vancouver but not sure if it’s actually running.

Might be worth following this page as it updates as to what flights are running. At this time ANZ is not taking new bookings but it may change in the future. Can Australians transit via AKL or Japan? Other thing I noticed today is Hawaii-Japan route opens on November 6 so not sure if that will enable bookings in economy. Think all the flights out of the USA you will need to book business class.

Transit via AKL is allowed, as long as the transit time is less than 24 hours (and you have to remain airside) - link. Economy seats (OW) available online departing LAX on 12 December for US$2694 (with a 3-hour transit in AKL). Slightly cheaper seats available departing on 15 December.

US$. I must admit I have only been checking business class flights because of the bump factor. I think it is key to be sure the airline is actually running those flights before purchasing as I've noticed airlines selling flights which then get withdrawn a week later. Would hate to get caught not able to get a refund or alternative flight.

True. Might have to splurge!

Yes checked all of those including SanFran and Canada. Delta is the one charging $15,000

Consider Air New Zealand via AKL and Japan Airlines via HND
Yes checked. Most flights are either going via SanFran or Taipei and Japan

Exactly. Joke is, I would search for a flight, go to book it and then it would come up with a message saying....."this flight is not available anymore"....sigh

Yes I saw those. Unfortunately I wont be leaving until the 27th of December or after that date.

Exactly. I guess I will just play the waiting game for now.

The other bizarre thing I have noticed, if I price out the flight from SAN to SYD which obviously goes via LAX or SFO on somedays it comes up $1k cheaper than buying LAX - SYD. Other issue I've encountered is if I put in a domestic leg from SAN to LAX it might involve 3 flights. We are of the mind that we likely won't pull the trigger until they significantly lift quarantine limits which should result in additional seats at a cheaper price.

I might try the SanFran to Sydney route again.
I was hoping it might be cheaper once the quarantine limits are lifted. Seems Australia is starting to open up again so lets see.

Welcome to AFF @Indiana Hibberd - Not sure you are aware of this, but the booking mentioned a from San Diego and route by way of San Francisco or Los Angeles - weirdly, often this can be less expensive than direct.

I have noted that even with AA flights coming online later this month, ANZ restarting twice weekly in December, flight prices have not eased. I think until they significantly increase quarantine numbers there is going to continue to be a squeeze for flights out of the USA. I think for best pricing you need to be looking further out. When I was looking in October prices in December were far more reasonable than November costings. However I note that now December prices are not looking favorable. Good luck with your quest.
