I am currently in California trying to get back to Sydney. The only cheapish flight to Australia is on the 30th of Dec yet when I went to book it, it said it was booked out....sigh....so frustrating!

Does anyone know of any flights or airlines that have flights under $4,000??

Preferably return.

Thanks in advance.

Whereabouts are you based? SD is rather difficult to get the direct flight out of to LAX at this time. Other thing is if you find a date it might be worth calling the airline to see if you can get a late night flight out of somewhere like SAN then overnight in SFO or LAX. I've been checking this morning SAN to SYD and if you could go tonight it's about $3300 for an economy seat, goes to $5400 tomorrow then it's in excess of $6k through the end of the year. My jaw dropped when some days I see it's $18k for a one way economy ticket.

Japan Airlines - Los Angeles to Sydney via Tokyo (23 hours all up) departing 31 December - economy available at US$1815, premium economy available at US$1882

Fiji Airways is offering a cheap and efficient 1-stop economy flight from LAX to SYD (19 hrs total) for $850 AUD one way or $1450 AUD return from mid January onwards. How many nights are you looking to stay in Australia?

I don’t know if the government is allowing entries into Australia via this route but I can’t see why not.

FJ is yet to resume international flights, so I would not necessarily trust their present schedule.

Fiji Airways are yet to load in cancellations past 31 December 2020 so there is a very good chance (I'd say 99% chance) this flight will be canceled. Even if it's not canceled I believe that Fiji is not allowing transit passengers at this time.

Some options into Sydney include United (direct), Delta (direct), AA (direct), Air New Zealand (via Auckland), Emirates (via Dubai), JAL (via Tokyo), ANA (via Tokyo), Cathay (via Hong Kong), Singapore Airlines (via Singapore), Qatar (via Doha). Given Melbourne will start accepting international flights again, there should be more capacity on SQ, NZ, CX, EK, QR all of whom are quite fixed on their schedules.

Unfortunately I do not believe travellers from the USA can transit via Japan. If I'm wrong I'd appreciate the correction as that opens up other possibilities.

.

I was not aware that we could transit Singapore, however the Singapore Air site does allow transit if the flights have originated in Los Angeles.

I'd not be booking Fiji Airways as that is sure to end in tears. I can not imagine their flights will recommence as who would be their traffic?

From that page, you linked it appears to only be a ban on entering the country with no specific mention on transiting.

This is backed up by Timatic and Travel Doc

Where is say "This does not apply to the following passengers: Passengers in transit"

So the way I read it, as long as you're transiting on the same day through the same airport then going via japan is ok.

So is it possible for Australians to transit Hong Kong if coming from the US as I've just seen some flights open up later this month.

Yes, it is. Transit must remain airside at hong kong, be less than 24 hours and be on a single ticket.

Based close to LA. Might have to wait until March.

Apparently the borders are all opening up soon!

So it is the direct routes that are the most expensive = upwards of $6,000 and up to $18,000 (so far)....I could go to NZ but would still have to quarantine. Might just wait till March.

One day a week, on the same weekday, really cheap business class fares are coming up randomly on Japan Airlines via Tokyo. Have to make sure it’s not the route going via Chicago as that involves a change of airport in Tokyo. Good luck with the hunt. We are leaving next week as we decided to take the best we could get and just go.

The Australian government has repeatedly declared their interest in opening up travel bubbles with select pacific nations at some point in the future.

I don’t think my post about Fiji really warrants a sarcastic remark.

But transit to gain access to a bubble certainly won’t be allowed. Mind you, if Fiji were actually to let you in, I can think of worse spots to sit for 14 days.

Direct route is what I wanted, direct route is what I got....albeit a lot less the cost! Thank goodness for friends in the know....let's just hope not too many Aussie's are flying back at the same time! :)

Congratulations. I heard that neither Delta or United are bumping out of US so it should be safe. Other option is using points if you have them and are not fixed on a date. United are allowing redemptions but they tend to be last minute.

Yes very excited! Now I have to "try" and get a flight from Syd to Melb with my virgin points. This will be the fun part!

I guess you'll be able to amuse yourself during the 14 days of quarantine in Sydney, trying to find that points flight.

If you come from the US and arrive in quarantine in the morning, release time is between 4 - 10 am and you get to nominate your preferred departure time
