Just completed my first VA flight. VA1 SYD-LAX in Y+.

On boarding the plane in SYD towards the end of boarding Mr Timtammi and I were surprised to find someone sitting in my allocated seat, 13C. The Y+ cabin was chockers and ours were the last 2 empty seats.

The woman sitting in my seat murmured something about "swapping from the other side to have a bit more room" and ducked off. I assumed she meant on the other side of Y+ and looked to see where she went to and surprised to see her heading back into Y to join what looked like her partner and child. Was a bit surprised as while I have heard of people trying this on have never actually seen it in practice.

If our seats had not been occupied would she have been rumbled by the crew? I assume they have some sort of list they check against? I was a bit put out to be honest, I thought it very cheeky and I don't like the idea of people actually getting away with doing this when others (like me!) have paid our hard earned money to sit in those seats.

A quick review on the flight. I do think VA have a good Y+ product for the price. I fly QF Y+ internationally semi-regularly and I dont think its as good but then QF usually costs more. I really missed the lounge access, the trfr at SYD was a bit disorganised and generally I found the staff friendly and helpful when required but sort of a bit casual and cutesy for my liking. Food not a patch on QF Y+, entertainment good, 777 very nice, but I don't like the VA Y+ seats nearly as much as the QF ones. I really found it difficult to get into a comfortable position for sleep and even with a stilnox didnt manage to get much. In Y+ in QF with some chemical assistance i usually sleep quite well.

Cheers

Timmi

Once all passengers were boarded, the inconsistency in the number of passengers in the cabin vs those listed as as supposed to be in it should have made it spotted by the crew

The crew in the premium cabins always seem to have copies of the manifest at hand, so any discrepancies would quickly show up. I would be very surprised if the offenders were not immediately bumped back to coach, just as Elaine was!

I was hoping that was the case, certainly not fair to the honest paying passengers otherwise.

I also meant to add that we enquired at the VA check-in desk about the possibility of purchasing an on departure upgrade to J and were told that VA don't do that and we would have had to call reservations prior to the flight to organise this. I know some people have reported these being sold by VA from time to time so I can only assume that either this check-in agent wasn't aware of it (seemed pretty clueless generally) or that its only offered from time to time when they need to fill the J cabin. Although I didnt go up there I think it was pretty full on this flight, in fact the whole flights was pretty full as far as I could tell.

Cheers

I am sure they would. considering I have seen them with the manifest in had when bringing the food trolley around to greet everyone by name.
