Key station in Melbourne Airport rail plan to be built by 2031

A long-awaited train line to the Melbourne Airport is a step closer, with the state and federal governments announcing a timeline for completion of the nearby Keilor East station.

By 2031 apparently with no timeframe for the actual airport link….
Crazy that the airport won’t get a rail link for at least the next 10 years when the main rail spur only needs to be built from the western ring road.

Can only imagine the state of the terminal approach road by then even with the current remodel.

With Victoria close to bankruptcy that State needs some pretty large changes to get a rail service happening.We used the Lexus taxi limo service this month and it went really smoothly with pick up across the road at the airport hotel.

They are going down the route of huge capital expenditure which is great for future proofing but until the rail connection is built, won’t generate much extra revenue.

Surely a low cost option should have been prioritised in the short / medium term to at least build the spur to the airport and run as Vline velocity units into southern cross. Duplicate, electrify, build intermediate stations down the track…at least it’s better than nothing. (Very similar to how the YYZ train service was implemented)

I thought the federal is also willing to invest a significant chunk to get it done as its part of infrastructure Australia projects.

I just suspect its being dragged out because various parties have incentives to drag it out as long as they can.

That's changing very very soon (coming days) with the pickup and new drop-off hub about to start.
