Key station in Melbourne Airport rail plan to be built by 2031

A long-awaited train line to the Melbourne Airport is a step closer, with the state and federal governments announcing a timeline for completion of the nearby Keilor East station.

By 2031 apparently with no timeframe for the actual airport link….
Crazy that the airport won’t get a rail link for at least the next 10 years when the main rail spur only needs to be built from the western ring road.

Can only imagine the state of the terminal approach road by then even with the current remodel.

With Victoria close to bankruptcy that State needs some pretty large changes to get a rail service happening.We used the Lexus taxi limo service this month and it went really smoothly with pick up across the road at the airport hotel.

They are going down the route of huge capital expenditure which is great for future proofing but until the rail connection is built, won’t generate much extra revenue.

Surely a low cost option should have been prioritised in the short / medium term to at least build the spur to the airport and run as Vline velocity units into southern cross. Duplicate, electrify, build intermediate stations down the track…at least it’s better than nothing. (Very similar to how the YYZ train service was implemented)

I thought the federal is also willing to invest a significant chunk to get it done as its part of infrastructure Australia projects.

I just suspect its being dragged out because various parties have incentives to drag it out as long as they can.

We used the Lexus taxi limo service this month and it went really smoothly with pick up across the road at the airport hotel.

That's changing very very soon (coming days) with the pickup and new drop-off hub about to start.

They have a pothole problem at the moment so a lot of rail related projects put on the back burner.

Not a good look when the premier when asked about the motorcyclist death after hitting a big pothole, said he is not the Roads minister. The problem for him is that he is the Premier and was the immediate previous roads minister

We are the pothole capital, my 15min drive to work each morning I pass at least 15 ph's.
As handy as a airline train would be, we have more pressing items atm.

The prospect of a rail link to the airport has been in discussion for at least 62 years, but has been beset by decades of delays.

The project has faced a number of setbacks, including a dispute over where the station should be built and arguments between the airport and the state government over whether it should be built underground or above ground. In July 2024, the airport backed down from its preference for a more expensive underground line in order to get the project moving.

The Victorian government has previously announced the long-awaited train line to the airport would be running by 2029, then 2033.
It has since gone quiet on a final completion date.

Here’s a a suggestion. What about in the interims having a public bus to Broadmeadows that doesn’t take 10 mins or longer to walk to the bus stop. Could not get further from the main 3 terminals. Or if that’s too hard allow it to be the closest bus stop.

Ha! I see little chance of the stop being relocated back to the terminals.

The bus stop used to be smack bang in front of the International Terminal, also down past T4 where the Novotel now is, up outside T1. It has been in various locations over the decades.

I know the state government can't really do anything but shouldn't the Federal government force MEL to provide these spots?

The bus stop at the airport isn't at the terminal, from memory it's down Centre Rd a way - probably a 10 minute walk from there to QF.

The aiport bus stop has moved - it's right at the very north-east end of the terminal on the inner road, across from the "Business Parking" area.

The airport wanted an access fee from every passenger. The government refused. I guess the compromise was to have a bus stop far far away.
