Singapore (SIN) Stopover Tips

Thank you for the update and all the tips, I look forward to my stay there next week and some chicken rice. The weather change is going to be a shock for the system after freezing European temperatures 🌡.

Virgin - Singapore Airlines - Air France transfers at Changi

After some advice please.

I have two separate rewards tickets that are linking up in Changi. Firstly, I'm taking a Virgin flight from BNE - DRW and then transferring on an SQ flight for the DRW - SIN leg. This itinerary was booked via Virgin Australia points. At Changi, I'm then connecting to an Air France SIN - CDG flight that was booked using QF points. There's nearly 4 hours layover at Changi so should be plenty of time to make the connection (and enjoy the lounge) but I'm trying to work out the logistics on making the transfer.

Do you think there's any chance that the Virgin staff in BNE will tag my luggage all the way to CDG? Should I hit the transfer desk at Changi as soon as I land and hope they can intercept my bags and route them on to the Air France flight? Or should I just clear immigration, collect my bags and then check in landside for the Air France flight and go back through immigration?

As VA don't have an interline/through checking agreement with AF, I don't think tagging through from BNE will work. Sounds like hitting the transfer desk at SIN would be the best option, with Plan B clearing immigration and re-checking - 4 hours should be plenty of time.

The other option, depending how much time you have at DRW, you could collect and recheck there - it's highly likely that SQ agents will be able to check it through to CDG, but I think the Changi option might be better.

SQ interline with AF so would recommend checking to DRW then re checking in there even though it’s seperate tickets

As long as there’s enough time to collect and get to SQ checkin before checkin closes allowing for modest flight delay of course. (SQ counter at DRW closes 40 mins before departure).

BNE VA flight arrives two hours before the SQ departure and let’s face it DRW doesn’t have a lot to look at while your waiting for your flight!

Darwin airport International is quite small and even with 2 flights out around the same time, easy enough to clear Customs

If the interline works at Changi even if the flights depart froM different terminals, the Skytrain operates to get you between them really promptly (terminal 3 to 2 goes through the Jewel) - otherwise if you clear customs you can easily see it

Aside that the Butterfly garden airside Terminal 3 is a beauty

I have 2 nights in SIN (land 9:30pm) on Thur 7th May - Sat 9th May (flight depart SIN at 10am).

Any suggestions for 2 nights of accomodation? Will most likely hang out at a few bars and keep it low key during the only full day i have.

i'm gold with ALL / Marriot / Hilton if that helps. Prob want to spend max $350 a night.

I've mentioned previously that I stay out at the Village Hotel at Changi. Great hawkers' markets, along with a few bars. The hotel is ok, but at SIN150 cannot complain. You can get a bum boat for $4 across to Pulau Ubin, and right into the forest/rainforest. Last visit came across a spitting cobra on a birdshoot, but missed the million dollar photoshoot as when it turned around and looked a me, photography was the last thing to think about!!!!!

A tip for those with motility issues or who like to ride a bicycle. The Riverwalk runs alongside the Singapore River for a long way. For me the important part is that you can avoid all steps and reasonable distance between seats to have a little rest.
For bike riders an. easy way to get around quickly without having to deal with cars but please give way to pedestrians. Lots of restaurants and bars. An added bonus this time was seeing Singapore’s otters.

News. report on local TV tonight that they are going to sterilise the otters as they are starting to invade local property.

I've seen them in the about half a dozen locations across the island. You never know where they might pop up.

Including this one near the entrance of the Botanic Gardens:

I saw some off Gardens by the Bay (just opposite Satays by the Bay) 2 mths ago. First time for me I think.

I was totally oblivious to their existence until I saw a doco a year or so ago!

The whole transformation of the Singapore river has been a huge success in many ways. I’m pretty sure it was still a bit grotty in 1990 (my first ever visit) but it’s now part of the water supply!
