Hi

I have a SIN-SYD on BA in economy (it is a QF redemption) but am unable to check-in online as apparently the airport is not permitting me to check in online - I am required to check in in person at the airport.

This is the second time I think this has happened (previously time was a QF SIN-SYD).

Does anyone know why changi airport would be preventing on-line check-in? It's particularly annoying because I am now unable to select seats until I get to the airport. (I am Australian resident/citizen)

This is nothing to do with Changi Airport.
It’s much more likely due to the interface between BA and QF and your passenger information.

I couldn't check-in my bags early at Jewel in SIN recently (but online check-in worked) and was later told it was due to some "name issue" which apparently has happened to others...

I wouldn’t stress, on a recent GVA-LHR-SIN (BA then QF) I couldn’t online check in but it did work when i went to the airport.

the BA online chat person said it was the airport but i suspect you're right about it being the airline. It's just annoying I can't work out how to avoid it because it has happened before.

Not as concerned about not having a flight - more that I can't select seats and it looks like it will be a full flight.

Has happened to me a lot of times and could be due to a few things ;

1. Passport/Visa verification required before permitting to check-in and board the aircraft. Understand that you are an AU National/PR, but as PR this has happened to me every time, even to go to the country of my then citizenship, where I don't need a visa to enter.
2. C-19 related docs verification (if, any) - this might not be applicable in your case though.
3. Any special requests that were made as part of the booking, might warrant a physical check-in at the airport.

your passenger information
This too, sometimes if the APIS is not updated and depending on your destination/transit, there might be a flag to check-in in person to verify entry requirements. For instance, this happens to me every time I fly via Sri Lanka when booked on QF website.

the BA online chat person said it was the airport
Not normally for check-in itself. It might be the airport if you are trying to change seats, 24 hours within the departure time. In this case, from what I understand, the control of the aircraft goes to the airport and it's not possible to change seats, except at the check-in desk/kiosk and not online.

Not as concerned about not having a flight - more that I can't select seats and it looks like it will be a full flight.
Understand that this can be frustrating. Although, I can't see it in your badge, depending on your FF status, you could call the airline and select the seats you are after? Have a safe flight.

There are some differences in the APIS Qantas collects vs BA collects; i found in 2019 this stopped me checking in online for BA flights booked through QF.

So last year prior to travel I made sure I had accessed my booking which had flights with QF, BA and AA via each individual airlines website and entered the information that had not flowed through from QF (or that QF did not ask for). Then I had zero issues checking in online.

I do that also but presumably you'd have to do that anyway when checking in with the operating carrier?

The OP has a QF Award on BA Metal; worth checking that they have entered accurate APIS on both their booking on qantas.com and also by going to BA website and double checking everything there for the same.

The QF app and QF website incorrectly advise customers they have to check in at airport when the flight isnt on QF metal; when the correct advice in this case is to go to the BA website first verify that the passenger information for booking is complete and correct (including any covid decalarations) and then proceed to check-in.

Of course if OP has done this and there is a still an issue, then best to get to airport very early to sort it out.

and alas, the early checkin at the Jewel doesn’t include BA flights…. 😔

At airport now - only 40+ are boarding in Singapore and the rest are continuing passengers from London. Was told that no one was able to check in online and I was on standby as the flight is full. They also said my seat allocation could change at the gate so I suspect they’re trying to move passengers around to deal with oversold full flight.

Yep, flight looks chokers! Except for the 3 vacant seats in J. Someone’s in for a pleasant surprise.

Are you travelling on BA15 leaving in 50 minutes? I’m also on this flight. Currently in the QF lounge but will walk down to the gate shortly.

I’ve mentioned on another thread that I once received a phone call from BA while I was sitting in the QF SIN Lounge waiting to fly home - they asked if I would mind being upgraded to F! The catch was the IFE at the seat was broken. I’m thinking, well I’m going to try and sleep anyway. As it was, there was another seat with working IFE. The funny thing was, I got an upgrade to F when checking in at SYD on the way out (again BA to SIN) - this was all on an AY J ticket to Europe and back! Precovid of course….

Well that was indeed a very full flight. So much so that even the jump seats by the doors in Y were occupied for the entire flight by people who were not crew members, except during takeoff/landing when the crew sat there. (I’m guessing they may have been staff/family of staff on standby travel?)
