So, I help my pensioner mother get a ticket to MEL-LHR with SIA in May returning June. When I was searching originally, I could find prices on W class fares for $2150 odd. When I searched last week, price had gone up to $2450 for a H class fare and my mum booked.

Today I see notice about SIA going back on sale for flights May-Jul again so I look it up and W class fares are available on the same flights for $2050.

My mum wants to go A380 on SIA and I can't convince her to go EY for a much cheaper price on a 777. Being a pensioner, every penny saved is worth it.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions we can use to try and get either a refund or some other bonus or the likes from SIA since the price has gone done for a sale?

The worst case scenario here is that we cancel the flight for the $120 fee and then rebook back on the new fare price. So we have nothing to lose by trying.

What are the fare rules? SQ are generally very strict in adhering by them.

Fare rules (on lower - W class) are:
Before first flight has departed and with payment of USD100, subject to currency conversion and your bank's exchange rate. After first flight has departed, ticket is non-refundable except for fuel surcharges and airport taxes. For itineraries with flights to and from USA, if you purchased your ticket one week or more prior to the flight's scheduled departure date, you may cancel your ticket without penalty within 24 hours of ticket purchase.
So H class is higher fare class, so you should be able to cancel for USD $100, but nothing else. The flights to/from USA allows free refund within 24 hrs, but that is about all.

If it were my money I would pay the extra to go SQ over EY if in Y. I was very, very pleased with SQ Y to Europe a few years back.

you won't get the money back immediately so you will have both airfares tied up while you wait for the refund. This sort of thing happens all the time, I would just leave it at the point and just accept the $300 loss, but if you can be bothered going through the refund process then go ahead. You will need to pay for the new fare now, then submit the refund request.

You just never can predict when a sale will come along, I wouldn't bother checking prices again once I booked to save myself the heartache

I was thinking of putting the new fare on my CC (points) and then have my mum fix it up when the refund came through.

How did she pay for the higher fare?

Does the credit card (if she used one) have a price guarantee for it?

I know my ANZ Platinum does but I don't know how that works for airfares and given it's a different fare class too...
