Here is, I hope, the thread to share all our opinions and stories about... shubs. For the less experienced amongst us, that's the combination of bathtub with a shower overhead that is still extremely common in hotels all around the world.

I guess some of us have unfortunately had the odd slip in a shub, hopefully not paralysing.

The odd thing is that many of us are old enough to have put up with shubs for such a long time. They are not in mode anymore - straightforward walk-in showers (potentially with a separate bathtub) are common now. I would bet it is more that walk-in showers save space over shubs more than any perceived safety factors.

But for a long time, everyone put up with shubs, with or without a rubber floor mat.

I believe most Japanese hotels still have shubs, but then Japanese bathe quite differently to most of us, except maybe the new generation (viz. most Japanese do shower but not standing up).

So... do you shnub the shub?

Imo Shubs should be banned. I absolutely refuse to book any hotel that cant gurantee me a walk in shower.

Ive had this stance since the very first time i encountered one in a Paris hotel as a 21yo, it was a huge claw foot tub with a shower over the top and a manky 360° shower curtain. I slipped violently getting out and ended up with a massive bruise on the inside of my thigh that took months to resolve.

I also feel shower curtains are un hygentic and should also be banned, accidently making bodily contact with a shower curtain makes my skin crawl and means need to shower all over again.

A clean walk-in shower, with decent water pressure which is wide enough you can wash your hair without bumping your elbows and a glass screen/door is ideal.

If there is also a separate bath fine, but Id never use it except maybe to rinse out swimmers, on use the ledge to place my foot when shaving my legs. I see nothing pleasant about stewing in a bath, and its wasteful as you still need to shower first or you are just sitting in filth, then rinse off again after.

Even if you are someone who enjoys a bath, most shubs are small amd not ideal for relaxing. Plus if not cleaned properly your sensitive bits are likely sitting on a previous guests tinea. Yes i always travel with thongs if im unsure about shower cleanliness.

Shubs are nasty, a trip hazard and cheap. What is really odd at some hotels in USA (looking at you Hilton) especially is that have massive rooms but then tiny bathroom with an evil shub. They could easily make the bathrroom a tad larger and have separate bath and shower.

A walk-in shower is more acessible and also more space efficient.

My pet peeve is hotel websites that dont show a clear picture of the bathroom set-up (not an arty shot, please confirm absence of shub) or specify walk-in shower or separate bath and shower. If it says shower or shower/tub combo its not worth the risk of booking. Many an otherwise well located hotel has missed out on by business by being vague re presence of a shub.

If booking a hotel where some room types have shubs, i put a note on my booking that i am not to be "upgraded" unless that room also has a walk-in shower, as once in a case of when is an upgrade really a downgrade a Crown Plaza tried to move me to a suite with a sub and were shocked when i insisted on being moved back to a stabdard queen room which had a walk-in shower.

Final point, i had no issue finding western brand hotels in Japan and Korea without shubs.

Still plenty of older hotels with shubs.
Thankfully most these days have anti-slip mats to avoid lawsuits.

As rooms get upgraded it basically means only the larger bathrooms get showers plus a separate tub
