Should I get an Ipad?

I was just looking on the JB Hifi website to see if the iPad2 pricing had dropped already but it is still more for an iPad2 then the published price for the "new"iPad...

*edit* the Apple website has dropped it's prices... might get a 2 after all

DSE have dropped their iPad 2 pricing to close to the apple refurb pricing, might have to earn some QFF points, what a shame.

Just grabbed some of the accessories of BigW while they are on sale, more QFF points - sigh:

There's one caveat to that. When it's released, iFixit will buy it and tear it down. That will enable us geeks to see exactly what radio chipset they're using, and to see if it's just software crippled to not work in the right frequencies here in AU (and other places in the world).

Part of me would like to think Apple are sensible enough to release it now with the foresight to have the product certified by authorities in local areas, and be able to 'flick a switch' via software or carrier update to enable the specific frequencies. Of course, that's logical. The iPhone 4/4S radio chipset actually has pentaband support, including the much maligned 1700mHz frequency range, but Apple have (and never will) enable it on those devices.

Well mrssimongr received the news quite well yesterday and is looking forward to obtaining the 2nd Gen - though I do now need to obtain a pink cover for it...

You mean you didn't already have a pink cover? I had you down as a new man!

.....and likewise MrsH took it rather better than I thought she might!

Nice one. There's absolutely no way on earth Marge would tolerate a pink cover - our daughter is only allowed to wear pink when I pick out her clothes and even then it's often controversial. I wanted to add a cover to my third gen order yesterday, so that I could keep my old cover and give Marge a nice new one, but I couldn't work out which one she would actually want.

Bought the original iPad on "Day 1" so it was already looking a bit creaky next to the iPad2.

Order the new one last night. Sure enough Mrs Paddy decided she needed one, and Paddy Jnr has claimed the original!

SWMBO Tax.

Sadly that is just the first installment - she knows I transit HKG and she knows there is a Tiffany's in HKG...

Not sure the pink cover would have worked with the black passport covers, black pen holder, black laptop bag, black rollaboard, black suit bag, black duffel bag, black dive bag...

That would be the other concern. It's not beyond comprehension to believe they'd engineer a solution to be suitable.

That said, it's Apple. They don't need a reason to do what they do, if you ask them that is.

How god is the 4G coverage here at the moment and how good is it for the next 12 months?

I am pretty much now on the 12 month cycle for the iPad so it is unlikely that I would get that much benefit from true 4G here - the only other locations I am likely to use it are HK, UK and PEK.

I will certainly think more about it next year when the iPad (fourth generation) comes out...

For me though the better screen will be great given how much I watch on (though I assume it wont improve 350MB Xvids too much...)

(though I assume it wont improve 350MB Xvids too much...)

You won't be watching as many Xvids in the near future. Get ready for the x264 MP4. Many Scene groups have changed the encoding rules and the new format is already replacing the old Xvid format. The quality is supposed to be better and the filesizes smaller. ;)

I'm looking forward to the H264 HD encodes on the new iPad.

I have seen a few of them appearing - don't want to switch mid season though...

You may not get the choice I'm afraid.:( I did notice that Alcatraz is still appearing as an Xvid but quite a few US shows don't appear to be.

I'm going to be trying a few in the new format on my EY flight to LHR tonight. (Hopefully using the composite link from my iPad 2 to the screen.)

If it works like CX it is a dream - don't forget to connect to the power as well as the screen!
