Now that QF doesn't sell F between SYD and HKG anymore, it has been reported that FFs will be able to select the F seats when booked into J if the service is operated by an A380: Qantas extends Sydney-Hong Kong Airbus A380 schedule - Australian Business Traveller

I have just booked onto QF128 operating on an A380 in J and the seat selection won't allow me to select a seat on the lower deck, despite it showing up as an option. All the seats are greyed out. However, EF shows that only 2A and 4A are taken, with the rest of rows 1-4 blocked and row 5 as available.

As a WP, I would think that I would be one of those that QF would allow into the F seats. If WPs are not allowed, then can it be that QF is only allowing WP1 and CL to sit in those seats? Does anyone know how QF makes these seats available?

i think it is WP1/CL and their families/other pax on their booking? so it could only take three or four of them to fill the cabin.

FYI, for anyone travelling in the future on A380 to HK.

I called up QF call centre and they gave me coughpy answers... just says lower deck is full.

I'm at SYD first lounge and ask the more helpful front desk.
So the answer I got is that lower deck is not available until day before the flight.
The system will allocate the seats based on Chairman Lounge -> P1 -> Plat etc.

Based on pure luck...

I am on QF128 on 26 January 2015 in business and it's an A380.

It won't let me select from the First seats. I have stopped wondering.

I too am on QF127/128 over the Christmas - New Year period, with both flights operated by an A380.
A few months ago, I called up QF to enquire about getting a seat in the F cabin, and the person who answered did not know that F was not being sold. She then asked me how I found out, and I directed her the this forum!. She also asked where it said that higher status passengers would be assigned F seats, and I directed her to the media release on the Qantas website. She then called the seating allocation people, who were happy to give me a seat in the F cabin. So I would suggest if you don't get the answer you want, hang up and call again!
The flights I am on (QF127 25/12 outbound), there are 6 seats allocated - there were already 4 taken when I called, and QF128 on the 1/1 I am the only one in the F cabin so far.

Thanks for the run down hotpaws! Do you have a link to the media release on the Qantas website?

Where's the media release? I seem to recall Red Roo posted something but I have lost all faith in customer care.

I have a couple of flights in Dec/Jan on the A380 and was able to select a seat in the F cabin. I can see only 3 seats are taken so far on each flight so must assume the system allows P1/CL to pre-select and the rest will be able to do it close to the day of departure.

It is actually on the Qantas Industry Site, which is readily accessible to anyone. Here is the link

It says that first seats will be allocated to our most frequent flyers, but does not elaborate any further. As I said though, no problems getting seating as a WP.
Hope this helps.

I am Silver and my wife bronze.
We got ourselves mixed up in the canceling of F on the SYD-HKG run, with a booking in January, 2015.

Luckily both are now sitting in the F cabin on the way up (2A,3A) after calling up QFF, but on the way back better half in 2A and I'm in economy, with an upgrade request lodged.

Will be interesting if my upgrade comes through and what seat allocation is made if it does.

You're hoping to upgrade from Y to F ?
Good luck lol

A free for all at T-80 hours?

I think Qantas needs a lesson in loyalty. It's not just about looking after Chairman's Lounge and Platinum One.

It's not a big cabin so there should be a system to allocate the seats. QF gives first priority to pax downgraded from F (regardless of status), P1 and CL. I hope WP will get to select the remaining seats before everyone else, not at T-80.

Firstly we can safely say there are no First customers on these flights as First was not sold.

Secondly flight is <8 weeks away. Is Qantas expecting a swarm of business class seats to be sold between now and then?

Thirdly I seem to recall a post from Red Roo or possibly a figment of my imagination that Qantas was going to call business class customers based on status ~2 months before the flight and allocate them a seat in the First Cabin.
