Hi all,

Suppose someone already selected seats in a QF A380's upper-deck economy section for an early 2020 flight, unaware that a number of A380s would have been refurbished by then and the seats in question may not exist.

Would Qantas automatically reassign that person to a different seat without notice, or would they get in touch? When would the aircraft configuration for a particular flight be decided?

For now I'd stay on the upper deck. On a full flight you'd have a good chance of being bumped up to PE (remember the new config has more J and PE seats).

At a guess in the initial stages all flights would be sold in the existing config and any seatmap change would only occur under 24hrs out.

Won't be bumped to PE for having an upper deck seat. Will only be bumped if Y is oversold and the highest FQTV and highet fare within those FQTVs.

Exactly.

People won't get bumped to PE on the basis of their seat selection, but on the basis of their FF status/PCV/ticket class/etc.

Selecting upper deck on Qantas in Y is going to be a risk going forward.

Could end up with you being re-assigned to a middle seat down the back.

What is the timeline for the fleet to be refurbished, forgive my ignorance.

I thought upper deck was blocked off for lower status people anyway, so more likely to be higher status members up there?

First back by end-Sep this year
Reportedly 4 complete by end-2019
Remainder by end 2020

Generally only the higher tier (which probably correlates to PCV/FF.
And on a late change it's going to be much easier just dealing with the 30-odd seats upstairs, then randomingly upgrading 30 people from downstairs and then have to place everyone from upstairs and deal with splitting families/couples etc.

The saving grace of QF from SYD to DFW ....

Downstairs in the mass of economy will not be fun.
