QF introduced this as a means for low/no status members to get into a row further forward.

Generally, non status flyers cannot allocate seats forward of the exit rows without paying prior to T-80.

Did we clear up why OP's companion was charged though? As SG I can bring my NB partner with me on the same PNR to any seat available to me as gold - all the way up to row 4 at T-80

I should have checked seat guru. Just Returned from Queenstown flying Qantas 737-800. Booked row 9 A,B,C and was looking forward to seeing the NZ southern alps on departure out of Queenstown. Couldn't believe it when I took my seat to find to my horror that row 9 doesn't have a window. I looked...

Except in preferred rows. Only the gold member gets free access to the preferred row. The no status companion has to pay.

Only QF could come up with an enhancement where row 9 is a “preferred” row costing money and rows 4-8 are gratis - albeit at T-80
