Scams like these

I got a text message a couple of weeks ago asking if I had spent $1000 on my Amex. If no, ring this number.

I rang the number on the back of my card fully expecting the agent to have no knowledge of the text. But it was legit. Transaction stopped, and a new card in the mail. Interestingly as I am travelling, they have already updated the card details on my iPhone so I can keep using it.

25yrs ago I had the call from Westpac. Had I spent 17c in California on my Mastercard. No, of-course not. The security agent explained that they run a small amount as a test and if it clears then they go in big.

That instant update is just fantastic, esp when travelling obviously. Worked for me on Android with a Visa or MC.

I had one a couple of years ago when I was in Vietnam. My card provider told me there had been two deposits (not charges) - one of $0.03 and another of $0.00. Let that sink in. No idea what that was meant to achieve but it was enough for them to cancel my card. How do you deposit $0.00?

On the email today ,another Qantas themed scam.
