Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thank you for your suggestions. Are there any ways to get the SC earn rate down to ~$2 per SC ?

I suspect it is a similar situation to those who do AA SC runs for QF earning - one should really consider doing such runs on Virgin's partners (DL/VX) over there too. And if you manage to snag a promo code, all the more merrier. ;)

Don't forget you retain VA platinum @ 800 SCs vs QF platinum retain @ 1200 SCs so ratio wise their systems are not equal. (not to mention their SC earning tier structure is also different...)

With the current double SC promo on you could retain VA platinum for ~ $1700, not withstanding the 8 squiggles. And you don't even need to fly first/business.

in the US?

One option that I've priced up ex-SYD that exploits cheap SCs on OOL fares is SYD-OOL-MEL (which can be done with a 'legal' connection on a Friday night, leaving SYD 6:10pm and arriving MEL at 23:25). Then MEL-OOL-MEL-SYD on Saturday. Doing all that in PE nets 520 SCs at $3.64/SC.

Personally, I might downgrade a couple of legs to flexis or savers because I don't really need the 'full' 520 SCs (I'm aiming to scrape into gold - I'm extremely unlikely to reach platinum, and don't see much marginal value in it over gold, so anything over 500 SCs is a bit of a waste).

I am looking to make my first status run (new to the idea of them).
I was just wanting to ask a few questions regarding this trip... What do you mean by 'Legal' connection? could you do this also?

Friday 2nd Dec - Multi City Booking.... I read something about not being able to get the points since its not your final destination??
8:15am - SYD-OOL (Prem Eco)
10:00am - OOL-SYD-MEL (Arrive 2:35pm) (Prem Eco)

Which i calculated to be with double status credits:
60 Syd - OOL
60 OOL - SYD
60 SYD - MEL
180SC

then
Presuming you would purchase a return ticket for the MEL-OOL-MEL and a One way to Syd?
90 MEL - OOL (Prem Eco)
90 OOL - MEL (Prem Eco)
60 MEL - SYD (Prem Eco)
240SC

Which comes to a total of 420SC... How did you get the other 100SC?

All help would be appreciated!

I don't think you accrue SCs for each VA segment. Best bang for your buck is in the US.

Legal connection is just my terminology for the 90 minute minimum between non-connecting flights that DJ imposes.

On a multi city you get points for the two individual legs - ie two separate line items on your itinerary and thus two separate sectors. If you have an itinerary where the two flights are booked as a single 'line item' on your ticket, that's when the 'origin-destination' rule has an impact.

My bookings are:

Multicity PE SYD-OOL (40x2 SCs) OOL-MEL (60x2 SCs) = 200 SCs on Friday night
Return PE MEL-OOL (60x2 SCs) OOL-MEL (60x2 SCs) = 240 SCs on Saturday morning
One way flexi MEL-SYD (20x2 SCs) = 40 SCs on Saturday afternoon, for a total of 480 SCs

Note that if I had booked the last leg in PE then it would have earned 40x2 SCs for total SCs of 520 over the trip. I didn't want to pay the 'premium' for SCs on the SYD-MEL leg given I don't really need them.

Remember that PE bookings earn J SCs domestically.

Cheers.

Wow thank you so much for explaining everything, interesting rule they have on not being able to take another flight till 90 mins later..

I didn't realise that you earned J SC's domestically :O :)

I will definitely be looking to make this run for the 2nd - 3rd of December!

Once again thanks a lot!

Of course, you are able to book one-way flights on separate tickets with less than 90 minutes between them. Those who have a better knowledge of the DJ network - especially which routes a given aircraft will fly - could probably take advantage of that knowledge to make two bookings with short turnarounds if they knew it was going to be the same plane. I don't have that knowledge, so I don't really want to find that a ten minute delay in Sydney ends up disrupting my entire status run!

For those who may be confused I phoned Velocity yesterday and they confirmed that OOL-Mel is 60 SC (120 on the double offer, 240 Rtn). Also this flight goes up from $385 to $505 if you fly after 18 the Jan. It looks as though they are scrapping PE on this run and classifying it as Business

PE is being scrapped totally, not just on this leg, so grab the cheap deals while you can, and grab the rewards seats post 18th Jan at the great 6900 points + cash as well:

$385 for 120SCs isn't too bad!

Though if you are in the US you can garner same amount of SCs for ~ $140 less!

Care to share any routings examples for get for that rate? PM me if you like.

A super simple one (but not as good earning) is to just grab one of those $39+ VX sale fares (taxes extra). So for around $50 bucks u pick up 20SCs.

If you manage to snag a promo code that often floats around then all the better!

Note baggage is extra so won't suit everyone...

Of course you can stump up the extra $$ and fly 1st class, but the value's not always there.

You can of course have a look at DL's sale fares too but watch for actual fare bucket and the codeshares - they're not all created equal.

im thinking of doing my first sc run, already have tix booked from le to ool for 15th dec arriving at 11:20am, looking to fly back on the 12:05 departure in pe, you guys think i will make it or wait till 1:45?

just saw a 2pm flight back to mel via syd, if i were to book that flight would i get more sc? or would it be the same? thanks guys :)

If it was OOL-SYD-MEL on the one ticket the earn would be the same as OOL-MEL direct (120SC in PE with the double SC offer). I'm thinking about doing a MEL-OOL-MEL run to hit Platinum but I'm not sure the incremental benefit over Gold is worth the $790..

I travel for leisure so at 47 sc with velocity, wanting to hit silver before the end of dec! Seems like a good opportunity for it to happen :) still don't know about the timing for the flight home, would love to fly home 35 mins after arrival but just hoping there are no incidents that cause delays! What do you get/ earn when you hit platinum?

Silver attain just now is 200 SCs. If you currently have 47 and doing MEL-OOL on a saver (I don't think you said if it is saver, flexi or PE), that will earn you 15 SCs and the return OOL-MEL in PE will give you 60. (15 + 60) x 2 = 150. Add your current 47 and you'll be just shy of the magical 200. The OOL-SYD-MEL will still only earn 60 in PE.

If your MEL-OOL flight you already have is flexi, than you'll be right with the direct OOL-MEL in PE as it will then be (30 + 60) x 2 + 47 = 217.

If not, you could do the return in PE on separate bookings.......OOL-SYD giving 40 SCs, then SYD-MEL giving another 40 SCs (15 + 80) x 2 = 190 + 47 = 237, but this is going to cost you more.

Good luck!
