[Rant]

Looking at different flights, and flight options and prices (as we all do, don't we?) and I come to the conclusion that Qantas just love to gouge when ever they can!

Looking at SYD-AKL rtn on the same dates. LA800/801 and QF321/322 (Code share of LA)

QF in J works out to $2,311.08 and LA (also in J) is $1,162.15! QF is a whooping 198% more expensive for the same thing.

I know they can charge what they like, but it just pisses me off!

and still the same high quality offer of a sandwich as the inflight meal from SYD-AKL plus the insomniacs special service from AKL-SYD. I'd suggest looking at EK's J/F fares on that route; I found F on EK on AKL-SYD was amazingly good a couple of weeks ago

I wouldn't suggest spending the money for J travel on LA from SYD-AKL

Dave

Saw an even better one recently.

QF Discount Y SYD-ICN-SYD ~$1600 (Codeshare OZ)
OZ Discount Y SYD-ICN-SYD ~$5300 (with a weird little warning that the best fares may not be loaded)

No kidding

In your case QF is cheaper by almost 300% hmmmm. Watch the price once QF ready this thread. They will be $8000

Most my travel is AKL-SYD-AKL.

QF is my preference due to number of flights they have the the SC's.

If I'm getting stitched up by QF I'll try EK (usually J) for about $700-800 EW. Plus I get the chaufeer at both ends (saves about $70 EW or bad family attitudes). Downside is the 10am depart from SYD arriving AKL at rush hour. Leaving AKL at 5pm works well for me.

Went LA J the other day for about $900 rtn. cough service/food compared to EK or QF J; also hardly social AKL departure time. Very good price for the SC's I got though.

Just my thoughts...

When my wife and I went for leisure 2 months ago, we flew J both ways - SYD/AKL on LA ($613) and AKL/BNE on QF ($1,005). The timing of the LA flight was perfect for us. Commensurately, there was no way we were flying the return on LA at that OMG hour so QF was chosen for it's afternoon departure.

Whilst I agree that the food and the cabin service was better on QF, I think the cost and SC's would continue to have me flying LA on the outbound sector. For a 10.30am departure ex-SYD, one can't expect a full lunch and if you are well organised, a Flounge or Jlounge will have helped you fill up before the flight anyway.

I note this is only a sample of 1 and we all have different requirements, however saving ~$500 on the outbound is worth more (to me) than the difference between a full meal and a steak sandwich...

Can still make a good saving using Emirates and still have proper service on the run. EK at $1260 round trip isn't much different to LA, plus EK also provides, I believe, car services

I used LA yesterday since the QF flight was delayed and I had to use a Qantas flight number to get to NZ; the actual seating is better than QF's Millenium seating but an inflight meal of a sandwich is hardly what I'd expect from a 3 hour F flight compared with 5-7 courses offered by EK F

Dave

True, LA at $1162 with no car services is roughly equal value with EK at $1,260 including car service at both ends. That's a hell of a lot better than v8Statesman's QF prices which we probably all agree is OTT.

Minor point Dave - I'd never have use of the car services ex-SYD so LA would be better spend for me. v8Stateman would be the same (as he'd be flying PER/SYD/AKL probably).

Even just taking the car service from Auckland airport to Auckland each way at approx AUD60 gives a total value $120 making EK cheaper plus far better imo service inflight; if making use of the SYD transfers then EK comes in well under LA

You are correct LW, I will more than likely go PER-SYD-AKL on QF/LA and AKL-MEL-PER on the way home all QF.

Qantas strikes again! Looking at AKL-MEL-PER in J it is A$1,300. (QF134 and QF653)

I thought that is rather cheap for QF, so I thought I would look at just QF653 MEL-PER in J (same day) and it is A$1,576.

Good SC earner there!! 80SC (AKL-MEL) for -A$276!!! Anyone beat that?

That's pretty standard in the airline industry. It's do do with markets. c.f. In this case there's a greater demand for Pointy end travel on Qantas betwixt MEL and PER than AKL and PER.

It's world wide, not just with Qantas. e.g. SFO-LAX-DFW-ATL on AA in the Pointy end for USD583+++ and LAX-DFW using the same LAX-DFW Flight for USD689+++.

GST may also form part of the explanation!

Strange, I would have thought you'd have looked at via SYD on the return (depending on your timimg, of course) - as I would be looking at accessing the 743 service SYD/PER.

Together, you both hit the nail on the head. I'd be booking AKL/.../PER as an Intl ticket if I were you, v8Stateman. Savings all round - fare and GST.

Additionally, I am not sure about whether 'D' class ia available AKL-MEL-PER, but it certainly is not available for purchase on MEL-PER by itself. Can only get J.

The A$1,300 is booked into J. Using 30/08 as an example date, a fare booked into D saves you -NZ$900 (Yes that's right! $900 more!)
