Rumour has it & Qantas [778 non-stop London from Sydney]

would be more interesting to see the economics of running PER-LHR today with 777ULRs

im sure VA have run them already, which is probably why QF is looking at whatever the rumour is behind this thread

Why would VA have run them ?

They have no interest in flying to Europe, and would rather leave SQ/EY to deal with that

QF and other airlines have looked at the PER-LHR route before and ruled it out. Even the 777-8X probably won't make it viable as Economy passengers won't be able to deal with 18 hours in a seat and/or the high premium price such a flight would dictate

wouldn't NOW be exactly the time you would be working on the logistics of this? otherwise you'd possibly miss the boat when anything firm was announced.

No doubt the Boeing salesman has been knocking on doors but no ones has ordered the 777x yet. Even when someone does its further than 18 months away. Boeing has its ands full with the 789 at the moment so I doubt a new 777 will get too far from the drawing board until they have finished with it. Perhaps 18 months as mentioned by the OP got confused with 2018 which seems more plausible.

Oh so now it's a 787-9 and not the 777-8X ?

So more bad news for you champ

The 787-9 doesn't have much more range than the 787-8, it's just bigger.

Oh and it has far less range than the 777-200LR

I am getting really strong signals ( Rumours) that indeed Qantas are introducing 777 - 8 series aircraft for direct London from Sydney. Starting in 18 Months flight length 20.5 hours.
Exciting !

Boeing formally scheduled the first flight of its 787-9 Dreamliner for Tuesday at 10 am Pacific Time, a flight that brings closer the stretch version of the high-tech plane.

I love travel too. But this topic was meant to generally mean any Rumours from Qantas, not just this one rumour everybody is fixed on. Also the title was changed by a Moderator implicating that this is a 777-8 topic. It's not.

My subsequent post is not an affirmation about the 787-9 and not the 777-8X instead.

Thank you

I look forward to some new rumours Qantas related please

I see your trying to distance yourself from the subject and indeed your first post now that is been pointed out by all and sundry how laughable the original "rumor" in terms of reality is.

Cannot see where it says "this is about other rumors one might make up"

Markis thanks,

My original title post was "Rumour has it and Qantas."

Nothing else.

Then I see somebody changed it to the mono thematic 777-8 in big brackets!

I am not hot then cold like Katy Perry's song and I am not distancing myself from anything. It is still an interesting rumour.

Having said that I am challenging others
With interesting tit bit that may or may not but push the boundaries a little.

I thank everybody for their contribution so far, positive or negative is all welcome.

Ok, i think we have probably all jumped on the poor guy enough haven't we, probably best to leave it all in the interesting thought, but don't hold your breath basket...

I was just in LHR and I spoke to the QF Station Manager who has heard nothing of this. The last time this was discussed was a joint service with BA in 2006. The proposal was that QF/BA acquire four 777-200LRs to run LHR-PER-LHR non stop. The service would be piloted by BA and crewed by QF and fitted out in three class config. It was scrapped soon after it was pitched due to it's financial unviability. The only new route currently being discussed is an extension of the SYD-HKG flight into either LHR or returning to FRA and also a 787-9 from BNE back to FRA via DXB. BER has been scrapped and EK is planning on transferring one of it's slots to BER and have QF pick up the slack in that market. This is because EK can sustain a loss better than QF.

Maybe the real rumor is that Qantas are planning on recreating the original non stop London Sydney flight with the same aircraft on its 25th anniversary next year??

VH-OJA Boeing 747

That seems like the most plausible thing I've read on this thread and is actually quite a good idea. Surely they must be looking at retiring here soon.. why not recreate the orginal LHR-SYD flight as her last commercial flight, before permanently putting her to rest in the city she's named after.. It would be excellent publicity for QF and give CBR another tourist attraction (it needs all the attractions it can get :p)

It could become the new lodge!

Given the thread had nearly 80 replies on the one topic, that topic deserves a thread of it's own. Indeed I was puzzling about the original title.

Interestingly Lufthansa has just ordered 34 777-9s for delivery from 2020. I think that certainly rules out QF operating 777-8s in 18 months.

JB has already done it while at QF. Doubt its a question of viability of the metal given other ULR routes that already operate...more likely market forces

the next longest non-stop flight (by duration) will be DL201 JNB / ATL which is close to 17 hours.

Didn't that flight have a diversion to ASI (Ascension Island) early this year? It must have cost DL an absolute fortune.

Why oh why would Qantas consider a non-stop SYD-LHR or even PER-LHR route?

It would not be economical in an all premium config. Adding economy is not going to make it any more viable ieither.

And both of those routes are way too long in any cabin.

Why would anyone find a 20.5hrs direct flight exciting? Save an hour or 2?

That would be torture in any cabin. Some in economy will not be able to survive.

I personally would book this over anything with stops...once on board you simply mentally get in the zone and get on with watching coughpy Hollywood movies for... A whole day!
