Hi Guys

I read a post recently that said it was significantly cheaper to do a RTW leaving from another port other than Australia - specificall for Business class.

Can you help out as I want to go to Europe and the US in July (ish) and can handle 8 hours in economy, but any more is pushing it.

Any clues as to how, why and how much would be appreciated

Thanks

There are lots of threads here about starting a DONE4 fare in places like NRT. The savings can be in the order of $2000, bit you have to get yourself to and from NRT.

Have a look here for some examples.

Fare estimate calculator on the oneworld website

oneworld - oneworld Explorer

Singapore is only $200 cheaper than Aus on a DONE4, and Thailand only $1000 cheaper.

Japan is about $2500 cheaper at present. Also Sri Lanka used to be very good value and CX has just reumed flying to CMB

Some selected base prices for DONE4's:
  • Melbourne (MEL), Australia: USD9,500 - AUD10,499
  • Narita (NRT), Japan: JPY780,400 - USD7,300 - AUD8,070
  • Manilla (MNL), Phillipines: USD7,022 - AUD7,760
  • Los Angeles (LAX), USA: USD8,300 - AUD9,175
  • Columbo (CMB), Sri Lanka: SLR589,655 - USD5,476 - AUD6053
At todays exchange rates.

Theres also a 6 month (pricewise) out-of-date Excel spreadsheet that can give a good guide.

WearyBizTrvlr of FT did an excellent job. Here's a link to the Excel Document:

And for those flying economy :)( ) the fare class can be much more generous via NRT (or KIX or NGO), particularly for direct fares.

Hi all

First post here, sorry if it has been answered somewhere. I have searched (that's how i found this thread!) but am unsure as to the answer.

I am looking to book a DONE4 later this year and the ex - NRT option looks good. Problem is my TA is sure it cannot be done and will cost more.

So, my question is: How do you actually book the ex-NRT fare when one is in Australia? Can you speak to QF (or JAL?) and what is their attitude towards it?

many thanks.

Your agent won't be able to do it.

The way I do it is:
  1. Call American Airlines Around the World (ATW) desk (number can be found on aa.com)
  2. Wait for 24 hours until pricing has gone through.
  3. Call back AA ATW desk to check pricing.
  4. Call AA in Japan (number can be found on aa.com) quoting the record locator you got from AA ATW desk.
  5. Pay for ticket by credit card.
  6. Make my way to NRT to start the DONE4.

Unless purchasing in Canada, the fare for an xONEx will be the higher of that available from the port of origin (i.e. NRT) and that of the place of purchase (i.e. Australia). So as the Australian base fare is AUD10,499 and the ex Japan base fare is ~JPY750,200 (~AUD7,750) the Oz fare applies.

Given that it's 'booked' via phone to/in the US (call could theoretically be made from anywhere in the world, and paid for in Japan by CC over the phone (again, theoretically from anywhere in the world), what would make Australia the 'place of purchase' in this instance? Is it a question the Aagent asks you? The Oz-issued CC? Just curious.

In this case, it's paid for and ticketed in Japan.

The specific rule is:
15. SALES RESTRICTIONS
...

When travel originates in a country for which a specific local currency fares is
published and the ticket is sold in another country, the fare will be that published
for the country of origin converted to the currency of the country of sale at the
bank selling rate. The resultant fare must not be lower than from the country of sale.

Exception: Not applicable for sales made and/or travel originating in Canada
