:p A two fold question, that i need some help with. I am looking at 2 rtw f tickets and would appreciate any advice or recomendations for agents that may be able to discount it a bit.As the qantas price is nearly 30,000 dollars for 2 tickets any advice to get a discount would be appreciated. Also what card should i pay it with to maximise the points, thanks in advance

Welcome to AFF turtle :)

There shouldn't be much variation in price of a standard round the world - nowdays travel agents don't get much commission so can't offer much of a discount (if any) off the published price.

However there are many round the world products, and depending on where you want to go there it may be possible to use a cheaper product (generally more restrictive but not always) instead of a more expensive one.

Some round the world products are distance based (eg Global Explorer xGLOBxx) and have different rates for various mileage limits - if you can reduce the flown mileage then you might be able to save a bit. Others (eg One World Explorer xONEx) are continent based, so if you can cut out a continent then you can save.

But generally the easiest way to reduce the price of a round the world is to start it from a cheaper location. NZ is cheaper than Australia for round the world, but bigger savings can be had from such origins as Colombo (Sri Lanka), Bangkok (Thailand), etc. Of course you need to factor in the cost of getting to and from that cheaper origin, but some places the savings more than make up for the additional cost and time.

I am not sure which RTW product you looked at, but for a xONEx in first from Australia there needs to be at least 4 continents. If you can start and finish it in BKK or CMB instead, and drop Australia then an AONE3 from there will be a double saving - 1 less continent and also cheaper fare from those places.

When starting a RTW from another country, one thing to be aware of is that you need to buy from an airline ticket office or travel agent based in that country. If you buy from an Australian travel agent you pay the higher of the Australian price or the price for that country.

I have to go for my flight, but there are threads and spreadsheets summarising the prices of the main one world, star alliance and sky team round the worlds in many countries for easy comparison. There are plenty of other airline specific round the world products, and these airline specific groupings aren't necessarily airlines in the same alliance (eg United/Emirates has a cheap one ex-Thailand).

That price of 8,399 works out at 16,800 for 2 people, thats in the same ball park. The original question was for 2 people.

Thanks Gary but Turtle was looking to spend $30,000 for two if you look at the original question.

That is a great price but beware there are likely surcharges of around USD500 for each of the following flights taken (in either direction)

SIN-LAX nonstop
SIN-EWR nonstop
SIN-HKG on 77W
SIN-CDG (77W)
SIN-ZRH (77W)
SIN-MXP-BCN (77W)
SIN-ICN-SFO (77W)

Plus of course much more restrictive than alliance RTWs, only SQ services and only transit each city once (except SIN for purposes of return to origin).

So your routing is effectively limited to Oz-SIN-(Asia)-YVR/SFO/LAX/EWR surface segment JFK-FRA (surface segment) Europe-SIN-OZ or the other direction; unless SQ codeshares are allowed (in which case can take NZ SYD-AKL and SQ AKL-SIN for example)

I'm happy to write that, if the Australian version of the rules for this fare are the same as those for the one sold in North America, there are no surcharges for the 'premium' SQ routes. While the routings are a bit restrictive, the fare and lack of route-surcharges is wonderful:)

[but do you think I can find where I put the rules?! d'oh]

If you have a recent copy of the rules I'd be interested in getting a copy (or a link).

How did I guess you would ask?;) Alas, I didn't save them and can't for the life of me find the link in my browsing history -- I had been waiting on the Australian rules from a now-abandoned local t/a. So I'm empty handed. The best I can offer now is this Around The World Fares - Singapore Airlines
which doesn't mention surcharges other than tax/security/fuel. Sorry about the lack of documentation, KiwiFlyer!

Thanks for the feedback, is sg as good a product as qantas, and if it is why is qantas so expensive in comparison.Loved my last time in f with qantas but is it really worth the extra money??

I have been happy with my time in Singapore planes, but never traveled F, for me the Skybed type J seats will do just fine (Sadly most of the time my company buys only Y). I guess it all depends how much money you have !

Generally though i will preference Qantas over Singapore, but thats also to do with the fact i to to do most of my flying with them and OW carriers for lounge access etc, if you have *A status then i guess you would prefer Singapore.

One other thing, J is fine for me, but i am also young, maybe if i was 20 years older (and hopefully a lot more weathly) then i would have a different idea on whats acceptable.

In my experience SQ is better inflight product than QF in all 3 classes.

The SQ website is always vague on rules :(

Is that QY fare available only from AUs or from North America as well? Can you share the farecode for it? It is a very good fare, and HEL is a very nice connection port in Europe.
