A positive news (err... publicity) story for QF never hurts. And the fact that QF scooped the news item --- A++ to the media team.

On the other hand RedRoo, it might be nice to have the 747 make a regular stop in PER on the SYD-JNB route. Say once a week each way to verify that people actually fly internationally from PER... And would use QF if they could. And I think an occasional 747 between PER and SYD would be an attractive proposition for the domestically inclined.

Obviously the path is far too long for wandering

We first pioneered the carriage of a fifth engine with our Boeing 707s back at the dawn of the jet age to save shipping costs. The last time we carried an engine like this was back in 2011.

I didn't realise QF were still flying 707s in 2011 ;).

I think it's a bit rich to laud the Qantas media team for getting a scoop on a story from inside Qantas. Not like they had to wear out the soles of their shoes to find it.

No elaborate hoax, this really happened yesterday!: That time when we strapped an extra engine on to a jumbo - Qantas News Room

We first pioneered the carriage of a fifth engine with our Boeing 707s back at the dawn of the jet age to save shipping costs. The last time we carried an engine like this was back in 2011.

I recall my parents being stuck I'm sure, funnily enough, in JNB on a QF 747 way back in the mid 1970s with a dodgy engine and they ferried one in slung like this one on another 747. I imagine it was more common back then than it is now.

While the news item did appear in a number of other locations, there are also a number of members here who pride themselves with being at the forefront of aviation reporting - good or bad (it increases their post count ) so Red Roo has "upped the ante" at least with respect to AFF. And it's not like the story was trying to get us to spend money  I got my two cents in with the remarks on Perth scheduling. That should have been enough of a "back-hander"

So Red Roo - keep us on our toes with respect to the news. And report back the obvious sentiments of some of (a large portion thereof?) the Perth QFF community to the schedulers.

Happy wandering

Fred

Qantas 747 Special Visit

Not sure if anyone covered this yet so yeah.
On the 6th Jan 2016 Qantas operated QF63 from SYD to JNB with a special cargo strap on her left wing between the engine number 2 and the fuselage. The special cargo is a 10 tons engine for her sister plane VH-OJU which had a blown engine and is stuck in JNB.
Due to the extra drag and weight. VH-OJS need to make a fuel stop and a final checks at PER before continue to JNB. Qantas only have the 747-400 with RR engines in it fleets that have this special ability/option to carry an extra engine under the left wing.
The last time Qantas 744 with a 5th engine attach was back in 2011
