Very interesting read. Was there a 747 stuck in JNB?
It wasn't the 1st of April by any chance

We first pioneered the carriage of a fifth engine with our Boeing 707s back at the dawn of the jet age to save shipping costs. The last time we carried an engine like this was back in 2011.
I didn't realise QF were still flying 707s in 2011.
A positive news (err... publicity) story for QF never hurts. And the fact that QF scooped the news item --- A++ to the media team.
On the other hand RedRoo, it might be nice to have the 747 make a regular stop in PER on the SYD-JNB route. Say once a week each way to verify that people actually fly internationally from PER... And would use QF if they could. And I think an occasional 747 between PER and SYD would be an attractive proposition for the domestically inclined.
Obviously the path is far too long for wandering

It looks like they did 2 VPODS in 2011 (QF5 SYD-SIN May 11, QF63 July 18) and 1 in 2010 (QF73 SYD-HNL-SFO Sep 1).I didn't realise QF were still flying 707s in 2011.
No elaborate hoax, this really happened yesterday!: That time when we strapped an extra engine on to a jumbo - Qantas News Room

I think it's a bit rich to laud the Qantas media team for getting a scoop on a story from inside Qantas. Not like they had to wear out the soles of their shoes to find it.
Here, here! And report back the obvious sentiments of some of (a large portion thereof?) the Perth QFF community to the schedulers.
