Rockfords discussion

Seems the '14 Rod & Spur has just been released, the tasting sheet is still showing the '13 but the '14 comes up on the online ordering portal for mailing list members.

I had trouble initially, after 2-3 phone calls and a week all was fixed, I have had no issues since.

GW gave the 2014 RR a good writeup on TWF (94 points). 13 BP was 92+

Thanks, I haven't seen it but am not surprised, I have already stocked up on '14 RR and also rate it highly. I haven't tried the '13 BP yet.

I am starting to think about what to buy next week when returning to Rockford, I was very impressed with the aged R&S I got to try.

Apparently the former Torbreck owner/maker David Powell has bought a vineyard in Barossa that used to produce one of the Rockford SVS (Flaxman probably) and Basket-press and is selling the stuff at $hundreds per bottle quite successfully. I know part of this is marketing - but the fruit comes from the same place and Rockford is always great value, even at $90 for the SVS. So....that's one suggestion!

Sounds good and I agree but SVS is only available to Stonewallers.... :-|

I've also stocked up on the 2013 RS and 2014 RR on line - I noticed that the price of the RS had gone up $2 compared to the mailing list order form that was sent out at the end of the year. Not a stonewaller so can't access any BP unfortunately!

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some Sparkling Black shiraz ?
I've enquired with Rockford but they don't sell via mail order.

Wine searcher give a few options here and I would think Vivino and similar would also have a few options, Langton's would also have them for auction.

Other then that you need to find someone who is visiting the Rockford CD that does not want one or more of the 3 bottles they can buy.

Did any of the recent Rockford group try the Rockford BS 2013?

I see Gary Walsh at Wine Front gave it a pretty average 92+. When you read the actual review it sounds pretty nice. Interested to hear what others make of it.

I'm also keen to hear as I was told it would likely be sold out by the time we get there in May.

We all tried it  I liked it and happily purchased some, but for me the '12 is better.

The '13 BP was forgotten though once I tasted the SVS Flaxman - then the Flaxman was forgotten once trying the SVS Hoffman.... my WOTD.

I liked the Rifle Range, but also thought the previous vintage was better.

It will be interesting to hear what other attendees thought.

I don't worry too much about differences year to year. It's good wine at reasonable price (even for the BP and SVS) and I love the business model/relationship building of Robert O'Callaghan. Buy it and you'll get the pleasure of talking about it when you do a vertical tasting at some stage in the future!! A 92 from Walsh is far better than a 96 or something from Halliday.

Basket Press hasn't scored all that highly on TWF in the last few vintages, so make of that what you will: (These reviews are freely searchable through wineosphere app so hopefully there's no problem reproducing them here)

In what world is 92+ considered average? Maybe on Halliday's 120 point scale. On the normal 100 point scale over 90 is considered outstanding.

I tried it back at Xmas time. For the asking price this is a no brainer buy if you like the style.
