Rockfords discussion

I was there on Saturday and same story. Must say +1 wasn't impressed at all with the tasting experience, that what happens when you stand in a small room with all the plebs and without access to the good stuff...

Whilst Basket Press and Black Shiraz are their icon wines, the Rifle Range and Moppa Springs are actually excellent wines in their own right IMHO, and you can buy them as member of the general public.

I do agree that the public tasting room can be a little "tight" if it is overcrowded with a bus full of bogans.

Apparently the current vintage of BP is an absolute cracker. In years past I've had access to a couple of dozen. This year I only have access to my own allocation. Interested to hear what others have to say.

Thanks Buzzard. I collected three bottles of the 13 from the cellar door over Easter last year. Keen to get some 2014 if/when available.

I had md my first bottle too cold and was disappointed, it is much better when it’s not chilled right down to 4 deg - or whatever a fridge is IMO
Same with champagne, over-chilling reduces the flavour.

I opened a 2007 BP yesterday afternoon, have had it in a fridge since I got it from the cellar door...ullage was ok, and the cork smelled fine, but it was just very flat and disappointing. I've got another one sitting there waiting and wondering if it's a bad bottle or a bad vintage. Thoughts from anyone? The wine I had alongside was a 2005 Paternoster Pinot from the Yarra Valley and that was light years ahead of the BP (vey different wine of course)

How long did you decant it for, if at all? By flat, you mean just lacking fruit on the nose? What did you pick up on the palate? Sounds like it could be either oxidised or low level TCA. You haven't really given enough information to conclude either though.

2007 wasn't the best year for BP... or it could be cork taint.

Hard to say without actually trying it.

Yeah, sorry it was late. I didn't decant, but poured the glasses an hour before tasting and had the bottle open a couple of hours prior to that. I found it almost completely lacking any bouquet, very little fruit and slightly acidic..tasted like cardboard but not wet cardboard if that makes any sense! If it was anything else I probably would have tipped it down the drain but I wanted to give it a chance and drank it over a 2-3 hour period.
