Renaming CBR airport?

For a second there I thought they were thinking of renaming it as Sydney South West Airport.

Signed - I elected to not show my signature as I don't use my full real name here and it would be pretty easy to track who is who. Obviously not an issue for those who use their full names.

Nice idea.. but personally if it is going to get "named" I would have automatically thought it perhaps should commemorate one of the casualties of that crash in 1940 , most likely (as boring as it sounds) James Valentine Fairbairn.

He served in the RFC in WWI... was Minister for Aviation etc...

If the name was good enough for the RAAF base in it's heyday.. why not?

Just a thought...

I've signed it too, what a top idea. As for Fairbairn, the RAAF base is already named after him and anyway surely the block box which in the long run will help prevent casualties from crashes, by revealing what went wrong in a crash do they can avoid a repeat of this, is more worthy?

I disagree - I like the term Canberra Airport. It is an airport. It is in Canberra. Why complicate matters?

Good lord!

Interesting Idea, but the RAAF base has been Fairbairn for as long as I can remember - call it that though histories sake if it has to have a name.

In any case, do people say I'm going to O'hare or Fiumicino - no, it's Chicago or Rome.

Melbourne Airport is also called Tullamarine. you've got JFK as well..

If this proposal gets up, I'll give it about a week before it becomes known colloquially as either "Dave's Airport" or "Wazza's Airport."

Heard her speaking on the radio. What a bright kid

I'm too poor to own a signature

They should use the renaming of the CBR airport as a prize for the politician who finally builds a second Sydney airport.

Funnily enough Sydney's second airport will probably end up being Canberra Airport anyway!

I'm sure Chicagoans say they're flying out of O'Hare... or simply ORD, but bad example as it has dual airports.

But does it matter if it is named after someone? There are many examples of airports named after people which are not used in common speak but nevertheless are often referred to in, well, itineraries. Of course there is Kingsford Smith and JFK, but others I can recall include Lindbergh, da Vinci, Chopin, Galileo, McCarran, Tesla, Marco Polo, Mozart, Tambo, Logan, Lambert, and then some lesser luminaries only get their names on terminals (such as Mr. Tom Bradley).

Well I've definitely heard da Vinci, McCarran, and Logan used as names of the airports in general speak rather than just the city name.

That said I like I expect most others abbreviate Tom Bradley International Terminal down to "t-bit".)
