Rename Australian international Airports

A few suggestions: (and no insult intended to the good citizens of these great cities)

The 'Ned Kelly' Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (highway robbery rents & parking fees)
The 'Christopher Skase' Perth Airport (for pure Kleptomania and planning foresight for the number of terminals)
The '<insert name of politician here>' Western Sydney Badgerys Creek Airport (40 years too late and over budget)
The 'Alan Joyce' memorial Darwin Airport (small, stuffy and full of hot air and LCC customers in transit to/from Bali)

I say just keep it simple: Westfield Tulla, Westfield Mascot etc.

One thing I noticed in the States, despite intense Partisanship, they do name a lot of things after Politicians. I don't think Australia would ever accept a "Howard" or "Keating" international airport.

Could always call Badgerys Creek (what would the 3 letter code be?) Richie Benaud International Airport. "QF222 now boarding from gate 22"
"We're on QF Two-four-two to Perth"
'Oh really Rich? That's an international flight!'

Love the fact The 12th Man got that right in his CD. Also talk about Richie going to the Qantas Club whilst the rest of the Commentary Team get stranded at a bar in the terminal drinking VB with the Bankstown Fuglies ;)

Marvelous effort, that!

Scary thing is, I could picture that happening!

MEL should be renamed Melbourne Darryl Kerrigan International Airport. It's just the vibe of the thing.

In all seriousness: it already has a code ... SWZ.

Not to be confused with Swaziland, or Switzerland.

I get the S is for Sydney and the W is for West ... i assume the Z is for Zombie apocalypse which i assume is the opening date.

Interesting to see that a code has been allocated already! I think the Z means they are up to Plan Z. ;)

I'm surprised the airport owners have no sold off naming rights to highest bidder, they seem to be good milking anything they can for profits.

Not a bad idea. QF 277 departing Etihad Airport (MEL) at 08:30 would probably be the last straw.

Careful what you wish for. Before we know it, Kingsford Smith International Airport may become Kogan International Airport :p

I'm glad that we haven't gone down the path that a lot of sporting stadiums have gone down with regular name changes depending on who the sponsor is. To some people, Sydney will always be Mascot or Kingsford Smith. Melbourne to some will always be Tullamarine...

And when Anytime Access was still around for the lounge, I know it was referred to as 'The Mascot Office" ;)

Very much a fan of calling MEL Tullamarine. Tullamarine is the suburb next to the airport, which is actually in its own suburb, imaginatively named Melbourne Airport. I'm certainly not a fan of naming airports after celebrities, but I could see a use if Australian cites start having more than one major airport per city to avoid confusion. That said, there isn't much confusion between Tullamarine and Avalon at the moment.
