Reciprocal lounge access In New Zealand

If you don't have status with Air NZ/*A then I don't think you'd be entitled to lounge access anywhere here based on your Qantas Platinum status.

QF WP does open a few doors for *A status matching at the moment though ;)

Actually it is the operating carrier that rules in star alliance. A Krisflyer gold should get into to the NZ lounge (as long as it is designated as a star alliance lounge) as long as the flight is operated by NZ (regardless of the marketing carrier). At least that’s what the rules say.

On the other hand, a KF gold won’t get access to NZ lounge when travelling on NZ code of a flight operated by a non star alliance carrier.

You appear to be correct.

From the Star Alliance website:

As a Star Alliance Gold customer travelling in any class on a Star Alliance member airline operated flight, you have access to any member airline lounge at the airport where your flight departs, if the following conditions are met:

  • You present your boarding pass of a Star Alliance member airline operated flight which departs at the same day as your visit or latest by 05:00 AM the next morning.
  • If your boarding pass does not carry the Star Alliance Gold indicator, you will need to also show your valid Star Alliance Gold card.
  • The lounge displays the Star Alliance Gold logo at the entrance.
You are entitled to bring one guest travelling on any Star Alliance flight departing from the same airport on the same day.

I'd be interested to hear what happens if somebody tests this out (trying to access an NZ domestic lounge on an NZ-operated flight with a QF flight number).

Do you have Gold (or higher) status with Air New Zealand? If so, you would have access to the Air New Zealand lounge in Sydney and the Qantas Club prior to your domestic Australian flight (with NZ flight number).

If you have Star Alliance Gold (not with Air NZ) you would have access to the SQ or NZ lounges in Sydney but nothing prior to your Qantas-operated flight as this is an agreement between QF/NZ and not the whole of Star Alliance.

If you don't have status with Air NZ/*A then I don't think you'd be entitled to lounge access anywhere here based on your Qantas Platinum status. The agreement does not technically give QF domestic lounge access to Qantas FF'ers if you're booked on an NZ coded flight operated by QF.

Thanks. that's what i figured. No status with Air NZ, Will see if I get lucky with card stock/flight number for the domestic. But the booking is all NZ coded.
Will try to push the flights to singapore, in case the booking actually earns anything.

Qantas then add another limb to this by allowing QF Plat/Gold to use Qantas lounge when travelling on Qantas marketed flight regardless of the carrier, plus AirNZ lounge when traveling QF marketed flight operated by AirNZ.

Is this only for trans-tasman and dom NZ flights?

Reason I ask is, out of personal experience ;

Flew SYD-HKG on QF127, then CX631 (sold as QF8255) to MAA. Ticketing done through QF, all flights are numbered QF, although HKG-MAA-HKG operated by CX.

Funny thing is the BP issued at SYD, had CX number on it, even though the flight was sold with a QF number. I asked the agent and she said that flight is operated by CX and that's why. I asked if it made any difference to the number of SC/points I earned and she didn't have an answer. In my experience, there is a 5 SC difference when booking on a QF codeshare and other flight codes.

As an example : SIN-CMB on QF codeshare w/ UL will give you 5 credits more than a flight number with UL

I mentioned that I was booked on a QF codeshare, so technically my BP should carry the QF flight number instead of CX. She wasn't sure and said that the system is only printing CX number for my booking reference ?

Not sure if I'd have been denied entry into QF HKG, but I chose to visit CX instead.

It will credit points/SC's as per the QF flight number.

Worked for me. AirNZ Wellington to Auckleand then QF to Brisbane. All boarding passes issued in Auckland with AirNZ logo but Auckland flight not codeshare. Allowed into the pop-up lounge. May have been tail-end of status match. Will be going again in June to Whitsunday Island on business so can try again to get into Koru.

PS, I received my AirNZ points so must not have been codeshare.

The press release on the AirNZ site says it is: Qantas and Air New Zealand announce codeshare deal to make travel easier

If you got denied access to a domestic lounge and you were booked on a QF flight number then you were denied incorrectly.

You’ll notice from the map on that press release that Invercargill is strangely not included.

While it should be if QF is codesharing on routes there, it’s possible it just hasn’t been included on their access lists as an anomaly or deliberately.

I’d recommend someone query with NZ directly.

May not necessarily be the case. As points in star alliance are awarded based on the operating carrier, and the fare class that it maps to on operating carrier (big bug bear of star alliance types is that the fare classes codeshares map to are not transparent).

Invercargill wasn't initially part of the code share flights but now it is. So the agreement should now stand in invercargill too. This concerns me as I go to invercargill a couple times a year and was going to make use of the agreement...

Interestingly, the Qantas website specifically includes Invercargill in the list of eligible lounge locations.

Benefits with Air New Zealand
From 28 October 2018, as a Gold Qantas Frequent Flyer, when you travel on an onward New Zealand domestic flight operated by Air New Zealand with a Qantas (QF) flight number, be sure to have your boarding pass or ticket and Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card with you to receive:

  • Lounge Access
Access for you and one guest travelling together (children over the age of two are counted as a guest) to Air New Zealand Domestic and Regional lounges in Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson, Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Well, an interesting development. Just got a reply from Qantas and they state “With our codeshare agreement with Air New Zealand, they have only agreed for our Platinum members to gain access in to their lounges.” So there it is, not sure if air New Zealand gold gets lounge access in Aussie or not...

As @sbor90 has pointed out, that is plainly incorrect.

It's quite sad that both Qantas and Air New Zealand don't know their own policies!

I am QP and travelling WLG-AKL-BNE on 17 June. WLG-AKL is codeshare with AIr NZ. Lets see if I get into the Koru Lounge? I suspect I have two spare AIr NZ vouchers but will see if my QP gets me in. There are two 'pop-up' Koru lounges in WLG domestic so if one is full I will try the other. I wonder what the state of the QC lounge is in Auckland international, which is pending renovation?

Here is Air new Zealand's policy for codeshare(with Qantas) for Gold members...and it includes all regional lounges "Airpoints Elite and Gold members, along with one guest aged 2 years and over, can use Qantas Club lounges when travelling on any domestic Qantas flight with a NZ flight number (e.g. NZ7000) as part of a trans-Tasman booking. Simply show your boarding pass and your Elite or Gold membership card at the entrance."...so the question is, why wouldn't it be reciprocated ?
