Hi All,

I fly from PER TO MEL very regularly. I am trying to think of a way to maximise status credits.

I used the points calculator at qantas.com and PER to MEL is normally 20 SC one way on discount economy. (40 for full economy)

If you go PER ADL MEL the calculator says you get 30 SC for discount economy and 60 SC for full economy one way.

Has anyone tried this? I wonder if I get the extra SC if I go through Adelaide... hmmmm any thoughts?

Yes you do as it would be 2 different flights, PER-ADL and ADL-MEL.
 
Note that you will also pay two fuel fines each way and risk a misconnection if the PER-ADL flight is running late. Perhaps just paying the difference between discount economy and a K fare might be a better way to earn more SCs.
 
I can absolutely, positively guarantee this will work. Best if the two flights are connected though, as they will check the bags all the way through. I may have done it. (and the PER -ADL and ADL - MEL flights have sometimes been on the same aircraft)
 
K class PER-MEL is not worth it! With a little careful planning on the trips then PER-ADL-MEL as booked from QF website works out a lot cheaper.

List price PER-MEL direct is ~$250 while K class is ~$627 and MEL-PER direct is ~$249 while K class is ~$626. Clearly K class in this example is not good value at all.

On the other hand the QF website offers PER-ADL-MEL for ~$315 and MEL-ADL-PER for ~$314. Much better value in my opinion and you are covered for missed connection as it is on the one booking. On some days, if you leave booking late, the option through ADL may be ~$70-$100 more than the prices quoted above. Still better value I think.
 
Chucksta, yes I think a number of us do the A via B to C. I tend to look at doing that non-direct routing where I have the time (say flying the night before) or if I need SC's, have the time and the cost differential isn't too much.

SYD/MEL/PER (and vv) and SYD/ADL/PER (and vv) are your options for earning more SC's. As others have mentioned, the chances of mis-connections are real (although I've been lucky enough on connecting flights to have never missed). Try explaining that to the boss (that you missed meetings, seeing clients), because you wanted to increase your QF status by taking more flights. Don't think they'd be too impressed with your reasoning.

For example, I fly BNE/PER, often on the outbound I'll look at flying via ADL if it's the day flights and I don't have the time constraints. If I'm on the night flight, then it's direct (no options). I always stop in ADL on the inbound (clients) so I'm lucky in that respect.
 
Did SYD-PER once via SYD-ADL-PER and PER-TSV via PER-MEL-BNE-TSV.

Not had problems with luggage or missed connection.

I guess as long as the connections are the ones chosen by Qantas there is minimal chance of missed connections.

Yes - it gives more SC's but the long journey is a killer.
 
Sometimes, especially if you book last minute, routing via ADL are the only options you get. The longer journey may be a pain, but at least the stopover airport has improved :)

And if I see an A333 turn up on the day I want to fly SYD-PER or vv, then that's pretty much what I'll be on, no matter how many more SC's I'd get going some other way :)
 
I wanted to fly BNE - CNS - DRW but there was only a 50 minute stop over in Cairns. Found out though, it's the same aircraft that operates it so there's no chance of missing the second flight.

(I know QF would cover me financially, but I don't want to be late for work). With one CNS - DRW flight a day, you don't want to miss it.
 
Hmm I thought there was two daily CNS-DRW flights?.. the 717 via Gove and the non-stop 734/H. AO operates CNS-DRW once a week too.

Back when I was a regular CBR-PER flyer, and before there was a direct flight, I was a regular on the CBR-ADL-PER route, and it was always the same plane for the two flights (even if the timetable said one was a 738 and the other a 734). It's always good to find those patterns as it means a delay won't inconvenience you too much.

Well, there is the one via Gove, but it leaves Cairns 5 minutes before the direct flight and arrives an hour later. So it's not much use.

There is also, however, the 3 times a week AO flight. Not sure if they'd transfer you onto that flight though. And you wouldn't get any points at all.
