Just checked in using Qantas QuickCheck and checked for availability on earlier flights (I was 2 hours earlier and armed with flexible ticket). Said there was no seats available but I could go to the desk to be waitlisted. Went to the desk and was put on a flight 30 minutes earlier. Also once on the plane there were quite a few empty seats (I got window exit row).
So I don't know why the QuickCheck couldn't do it. Anyway don't take "Computer says no" for an answer I guess is the moral of the story.

QuickCheck would have said there was nothing available to you as it was looking for available seats in the class of fare you had purchased. But it did know there were still empty seats (in more expensive fare types) so sent you to see a human who has the ability to override the system and move you to the earlier flight.

Probably an important point is that Quick Check would be programmed with a set of rules and it will follow this to the letter. How exactly these rules work, I don't know, but perhaps NM is correct on the class of fare thing. In some cases I have been offered seat changes on red-e-deals which are even against the fare rules (and Quick Check has told me so :) )

A human is in a position to make a judgement call on some of the border cases (depending, of course, just how much authority QF delegate down far enough).
