Hi there,

have a bit of an unusual question:

My qualifying period ends in December. I need to book a flight between 26-29/12 and have just received an offer for an additional 50% SC that I could use. In addition I am due the loyalty bonus after this trip. Taking all this into account, I can book into a higher fare and receive just enough SCs to make Platinum.

Now from my experience with double SC promos, the extra SCs post a few days later, in this case most likely in January and therefor would count towards my new membership year? And what are the chances on including the 50 loyalty SCs into December?

Many thanks!

No problems they'll credit to the year you flew. The loyalty SCs I'm not sure how quickly the offer posts. Someone will remember.

The extra SC promos usually credit to the membership year in which they were flown.

I believe (based on a friends account this happened to) the loyalty bonus does not back date (with the asterisk indicating a previous year) and applies from when you click the button selecting the reward. You may have luck ringing and asking for back date before clicking the option.

I can confirm that you will still earn the bonus after the credits post in a previous year as this happened to me but i am yet to select my reward.

I am waiting until my next membership year (Dec) to choose my loyalty bonus (50SCs). My comment was about how quickly the offer would be made so that the OP could choose the SCs for their current membership year.

Mine came through instantly. Sc from prior year posted (double sc) and the banner at the top of the page came up promoting the selection.

I believe you will have a harder time getting the 50% bonus credits to post mine took over 8 weeks for aquire 50% and 6 weeks for dsc which ended up being 2-3 weeks into next membership year.

So they definitely counted towards your new membership year?

In yet another example of stupid QF inconsistency:

Bonus SC promos such as +50% or DSC will apply to the membership year they were earned in (ie the qualifying flight) no matter when they post.

HOWEVER

Loyalty Bonus SC's made as a choice will apply to the membership year they are redeemed in.

This is based on much anecdotal evidence.

I think it's ridiculous but that's how it seems to be working.

Anyhoo.

It's only wrong in your opinion. Double and 50% bonus earnings happen on specific flights. Loyalty bonus offers don't belong to a specific flight, and are added to your total when you make your option.

Many of us have taken full advantage of the way it works now. It's hardly ridiculous.

yes, and more power to (plural) you who have. I've no issue with taking advantage of loopoholes like this in any system. We all do it. so I'm not taking issue with those who do this at all.

I also see and accept the logic of your argument re Loyalty bonus being separate to speicific flight earned SC's but a "gift" for the combined earned SC's. Yes that's a fair point.

However I will counter that with my own view that it still is inconstent in my view. Why? Because QF resets one's LB SC counter to zero every membership year, as they do one's earned SC's for status etc. (but obviously not the lifetime count). Further they tie the awarding of LB SC's to the earning of yearly status specifically by the condition that it does not apply to attaining P1 (which I do not have an issue with).

Given these facts of how QF treat the loyalty bonus SC's - both in terms of awarding them (as in, it only counts for the membership year and gets reset - there's no carry over if I earn 990 SC's in a year I don't get 490 carry over to the next year for the next LB) then it doesn't make a lot of sense (to me, anyway :) ) that these SC's should apply simply based on the date they are awarded - unlike every other instance of SC awards (though, I do not know how SC's awarded from things like the ANZ Black CC work in this regard - probably similar to the LB SC's in terms of the date they come through). It just seems strange that the bonus SC's would not apply to the year for which the loyalty bonus was awarded in. Or rather, they need not apply depending on when redeemed in the 3 month window which may or may not fall across membership years.

Agaimn I totally understand the point you make and see some merit.. I just have a different view.

And my main beef, as usual, with QF is it's inconsistent with how other SC's are awarded and what they apply to (but again, the CC bonus SC's could also be an anomaly)

my 3 cents worth :)

They are sneaky. I received a loyalty bonus this week. I don’t need it to get to WP and flights tomorrow on DSC will do that. I have to redeem the loyalty credits by Feb 2018 and my year ends in April.

I think I will get another loyalty bonus shortly so that will be the same problem.

So to work the system it’s best not to be too loyal too soon but wait til closer to end of membership year to earn and then redeem when it clicks over.

A classic case of loyalty not being totally rewarded.

In what way do you feel this is "sneaky"?

I think the idea of providing a few months to decide is pretty good.. specially if people are travelling and the like. OK sure, you'd prefer they gave you 6 months in this example so you could take advantage, but there has to be a line somewhere doesn't there?

At least in this siatuon you don't need the SC's so you can take the 8k points for each LB and put those to something fun, since you'll already make WP (and I do not think they go towards the 2400 WP+ level, though I'm not 100% on that).

You are absolutely right though that if one's motivation is purely status, and using these to get a leg up in ones new year then yeah, you'd want to do the bulk of QF(or JQ) flying in those last 3 months of the membership year because of this loophole. Of course not too many people can pick and choose their flying to match up like this, but it would be something to keep in mind for those wanting that extra 50/100/150/200 SC's :)

True. It isn’t sneaky. And you are correct they don’t count towards WP1 but I’m never going to get that.
I was hoping for a 6 month decision period though ;) oh well such is life.

So MrP has another loyalty bonus. He’s already requal for WP for year ending 30/4/18. This offer needs to be selected (points or SC) before mid May so I presume that if we wait until after April 30 it will credit to the next membership year? (Already LTG).

Out of curiosity, what happens if you don't select the benefit? What do they do?
