Question about the forum software

So AFF now has those silly ads, from MediaOne Networks, that slide out of the side of the screen and annoy the hell out of people. Who thinks of this garbage? It moves with the scroll bar and if I forget to leave the mouse pointer near the ad it starts up and I have to quickly look for the close button.

I do not want the ad to play. Ever. I have limited download usage and I do not want it wasted on this garbage. Does anyone have a recommendation for blocking it from Internet Explorer? And no AFF membership is not the answer....

Yes it is annoying although I think I may have managed to solve it by tweaking a setting in the privacy settings in Internet Explorer.

I am slowly starting to use Firefox more often so may make that my browser of choice in the near future....

Do it now :). Then install the add-on "Addblock Plus"

You could disable the Shockwave Flash add-on, and get your ads delivered as GIF's. Mind you the Qantas website doesn't work too well with it disabled.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

I dont get any ad's on IE or chrome (which is my browser of choice now) and only a silver member...

Mr!

Actually it is. A very simple answer.

To me, it seems the simplest and best answer.

Someone, somewhere has to pay for web content, and at the moment adverts or subscriptions are the two main models used.

+1. Could not agree more. This forum has saved me a heap over time, and considerably entertained me. Happy to support it.

Unfortunately Shockwave Flash add-on does come in handy on some websites.

Regardless of what some people think I should not have to pay to remove what I believe is an invasion of my privacy. Almost like extortion. No thanks.

I think this is a great website but I will not be paying anyone any money to be a member of it. Sure someone has to pay to keep a website running but just remember that a website requires members to make it successful.

It has given me a challenge to try and get rid of it using Internet Explorer or switch to Firefox for AFF browsing.

Wow. That beggars belief. Who pays then? Either advertisers or members. I hope you are totally unsuccessful in blocking ads. You contribute more than 6 posts every day of the year. At what point do you decide to support the forum? Can you explain your philosophy? Just curious.

I am quite happy for advertisers to pay for ads. If people want to click on the ads then fine but forcing an ad to pop-up and play on my computer is beyond belief and an invasion of my privacy. I will do everything in my power to block the ad.

Hmmm. I contribute more than 6 posts per day? I would say that is very supportive of the forum.

Okay - so everybody blocks the ads - the advertisers walk away - why pay for advertising that can be blocked? Then what do you do? Maybe then you support financially - not just with posts.

I am quite happy for advertisers to pay for ads.

Then you should be equally happy to receive them. It's a two-way street.

How is an ad beyond belief, when you said you are happy for advertisers to pay for ads. Advertising that isn't visible isn't advertising...

As for the privacy angle, I'm completely lost by that. You chose to visit the web site and it is something displayed there so you haven't lost any privacy. You're not forced to pass any personal details on to the advertiser.

While your 6 posts per day contribute to the forum being a great place to visit, it's actually doing the opposite in terms of bandwidth and costs involved.

That being said, I don't think you need to pay if you don't want to, you're getting the third degree here, but we all know you come to a lot of social functions, your share your knowledge with people online and offline and you guest people into lounges. You clearly benefit everyone here, and are very supportive!

It's OK as JohnK enjoys a good head butt every now and then. :D

As I mentuoned earlier I have limited download every month and I do not particularly want flash ads opening up (using my limited download) without my permission.

When I first joined AFF flash ads were not part of the website.

Yes and no Sam. More posts, more threads mean more users, greater popularity and more advertisers wanting to get on board. Think Flyertalk.

I thought the original question was simple and people are questioning my morals why I do not want to pay to join an online community. It is not about the money.

Do I really need another person to knock me? Perhaps it is time for another self imposed exile from AFF as it would appear I have aggravated many people....

The sad bit is that the ads are probably generating pretty low revenue.

My gut feel is that the site costs less than $1k pa to run. Probably the main value of the thing is the URL which I think could be sold to QF for $10-$20k
