Hi,

I am going to Bali ex Melbourne next weekend and have a query about purchasing alcohol.

Is it better (cheaper) to purchase after customs in Melbourne airport or fineto purchase at DPS airport before enter the country?

Also how much are you allowed to take duty free into Bali?

Thanks,
Dale.

I have no idea about Indonesian alcohol prices and duty free allowances but Dan's is often cheaper than the "Duty Free" stores in Australia.

International flights do not permit you to take liquids through security - purchasing from a duty free shop once you are airside is the only option.

I agree that I am a regular Dans customer within Australia but no good for this purpose.

One litre is the duty free entitlement.

Pack a bottle in your checked in luggage is the way to go.
Heaps of bubble wrap.

Do gooders in Indonesia have upped the import tax 150%, buying spirits in Indonesia is expensive.

Also sometimes you don't get what you pay for.

Melbourne duty free $30 - $35 for 1.25 litres or a twin pack if two or more adults are travelling
I have noticed with the new airport arrivals that customs are checking bags more carefully ie larger amounts than the 0ne litre
Also agree with Ksthommo you can never be sure of what you are paying for

But before you fly.
While beer (Bintang) is cheap , wines and spirits are poisonously expensive.

Depends on if you were going HLO or not

Currently in Bali. We brought Vodka and Bourbon from home. Not bothering with wine. Bintang is cheap, and we are loving the freshly squeezed/blended fruit juices. That may not answer your question. YMMV

Also, I noted that at DPS, duty free was charged in USD. The prices were not great I thought.

Buy your alcohol in MEL. I was shocked at the prices they charged when landing. Think $60 for a bottle of Red and $90 for Chivas. Smirnoff was $40

Their pricing leaving bali is semi competitive with Sydney, depending on what deal they had. Note, they price in USD but then convert to IDR and make a bit on that. If you'e buying low end spirits then prob just buy when you land in MEL.

TBH I think the "duty free" price on arrival wasn't much cheaper than buying in town. I'd certainly dry out if I lived there. Ony somuch beer I can handled :)

Duty free prices in Australia have been lower recently.

From memory 2 x 1L Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff were $52 which was cheaper than NZ duty free. SIN is slightly cheaper but not much.
