QP/JL Wireless Access problems [Fixed Oct 2011]

Its OT but lately priority boarding is making a resurgence, at least three calls I heard on Saturday mentioned it as part of the first boarding call for a flight.

We've been providing significant WiFi hotspot services for some years, in spots all over the country. That includes coverage throughout the Adelaide and Darwin terminals (public areas - and it reaches into the front half of the lounge in Adelaide at least). We'd just love to provide more coverage in more airports, and the only barrier to that has been to get permission to do so (which is easy in some airports, hard-to-impossible in others).

I can vouch for this. Internode general wifi access is better in the QP in Adelaide than the official Qantas service. If I can't get a seat in an area that gets the Internode signal, I turn to tethering to my phone (which I normally avoid because of battery life concerns). I am an Internode customer at home (and business), and only have good things to say about them.

Simon, welcome to AFF. I hope to see you in the Qantas Club one day and say hi (and thanks) in person.

Regards
Adam

Funniest time was when the wired network broke at ADL recently. Just logged the iMacs into the Internode hotspot outside and worked beautifully.

Honestly I gave on QP wireless long ago - these days just use the iPhone hotspot on Next-G, forever have login problems on a Mac particularly. As a 10+ year long customer of internode in ADL (previous bigpond cable/advance in the 90s) and using their free wifi from the early Citilan days, their products are solid. I do wonder if they'd have financial difficulty setting up in places like ASP similar to DJ flying into Uluru.

A pet annoyance of mine, why don't the QC AP's come up as Telstra instead of QantasClub or something...

I heard back from QF. Simons details have reached the right people and that they have been trying to contact him directly & the Internode office.

I am in the J lounge at Sydney T1 at present, and am receiving an 'excellent' signal. No problems at all (today), but it would good to have consistency.

I've tried with the WiFi in QPs all around, but since I've failed to connect so many times, I'd rather just use the 8GB included on my Telstra iPhone Hotspot.

Great to see you on here Simon, would be nice to have Internode in the lounges, as long as it remains free and speedy, it would be a nice alternative to Hellstra's offering.

Last Tuesday morning I was in the T3 QP and couldn't connect at all. Thought it was my computer as I didn't even get the Telstra Hotspot screen.
Tonight I was back in the same QP and connected manually to the wireless network first then got the splash screen with the login button, clicked that many, many times, in three different browsers over 20 or so minutes and just got the same screen staring out at me. No useful message like "you're screwed, it's not working for you because you're part Irish" or anything.
I clicked on the link to the T&C and clicked I agree (there was no directive to do this but I had to try something) and all it did was take me back to the same stupid screen.

Is it just me? Or is it useless now?
Will be able to try it in BNE on Friday.

Hi there - I've just joined the forum and noted this thread with interest!

I'd really, really like to pitch to Qantas to see if they'd consider having Internode provide the free WiFi in the Qantas lounges generally. We'd be really keen to do it.

Running into the WiFi being dead in the International F lounge yesterday (on my way to California - where I am this week) just cemented that interest (in wanting to fix it by seeing it replaced).

If anyone has some clues as to how (and/or who) we might approach at Qantas to pursue the notion and/or to pitch to them to do it, I'd be very appreciative of the information.

Hi Simon,

good to see you on AFF hope you post more frequently! I too rather like your hotspots around the place, however you need to fix it at the MCG! ;) Just saying.. you know!!

On another note, I've had issues getting the hotspot page up. After I click the logon page it is actually quite quick. Bit i hope whatever they do it is fixed soon!

I bookmarked the login link directly. Load that link when you first connect. I would recommend using only one browser and being patient (it can take minutes).

Honestly it is pretty poor from Qantas, when you see the number of people having to resort to 3G dongles instead of using the WiFi.

QF can't or will not get domestic Boarding at Convenience working or the 3 associated pages of their web site aligned with the OW benefits, so why should they care or work to fix free internet access in their lounges?

For me I tether my BB Torch to the laptop and never bother with the lounge WiFi because domestic lounge access just does not work or is so very slow as to make it virtually useless.

It is like being in a 3rd world country, lounge internet access wise.

I seriously cannot believe that I could get free high speed internet at Cambodia (Siem Reap) airport. Compare that to what is given in Oz and we clearly are 3rd world. Don't get me started on the state of the toilets that visitors to Sydney see!

After getting a private demo of Telstra's LTE a month ago, I'd never use WiFi in the lounge again once it is released. It is so much faster..

What I meant was the free domestic QF Lounge access is basically so slow as to be virtually non existent as one might expect in a 3rd world airport lounge. It is shocking, especially as Telstra's name is there for all to see how badly they and QF do it. QF have known about this for a long time. They have done nothing to fix it other than to say they are looking at it.

Hey. Maybe that is the idea? Get all the lounge lizards to stop using the Telstra / QF WiFi product (I mean I do that and tether through my BB) and so to save QF a bit of money? Technically it could be lightning fast.

I don't believe QF are paying for it at all, rather 3rd party companies are paying the hotspot cost. The Australian were "providing" it, then HP and isn't it HSBC at the moment?

That aside i have issues with public hotspots due to lack of security anyway so I have avoided using it.

I noticed recently all the HSBC signage at BNE was removed, so maybe not for long?

Well who ever is paying for it, the money QF is receiving from the sponsor is not being spent on the WiFi service. Just more Black ink for the accountant.
