Hi All,
It has been many years since flying MH and with this have booked flights in economy fair class Q which wont allow me to select any seats outside of standard without paying a fee as a QFF Platinum OWE and was wanting to know is this correct or have i just missed something as i am sure back years ago i was able to select the exit row with no fees.

Thanks in Advance

Complimentary Standard Seat selection up to 48 hours before departure, and complimentary Emergency Exit or Extra Legroom Seat selection within 48 hours at check‑in, subject to availability.

Does the booking show your OW status? If your QFF# has a leading zero, it can help to enter the full number including leading zero(s).
I was going to say be careful creating an account because any points earn might get redirected to MH, but it looks like “Q” earns zip, zilch, nada with QF anyway. So this could be a fall back option.

I can't see my OW status on the booking also shows i need to pay for bags outside the 7kg carry on and offering lounge access for a fee so will assume it has not recognized my status. From this it won't allow me to update the FF number to try when adding a zero.

Does the QF website let you open the booking under MMB? That sometimes correctly adds your FF details.

Otherwise, probably best to call them (MH) or whatever chat function they might have.

Not changeable on the QF site so went down the MH chat function which was a battle until finally a human took over the chat or at least i think so, anyhow i am told that my status is recorded and that i have the baggage allowance to reflect this although website still saying i have the 7kg carry on and can purchase checked in so no real resolution and enough time wasted so will leave for a few days and try calling and see how i go.

Unfortunately, pretty much all the old hacks of using say, rj.com have been shutdown as airlines have been tightening up access to their bookings. But if you haven’t already, it’s worth a quick check if RJ or BA (or other OW airline websites), even recognise the PNR let alone do seat selection.

It is correct FAQ

Is Seat Selection available for Malaysia Airlines Platinum frequent flyer members?

Answer
Standard Seat selection is not chargeable for Malaysia Airlines Platinum and oneworld Emerald members as Standard Seat is complimentary for these Frequent Flyer Programme tiers. Selection for Extra Legroom, Economy Comfort and Emergency Exit Seats are chargeable up to forty-eight (48) hours before departure for these tiers.

Thanks will check MH app at T-48

Update, T-48 has passed and seats are still chargeable for exit row, extra legroom and bulkhead.
Will try again at the airport as they are still available.

Sorry I didn't post this was my experience on 4x mh flights recently. Extra legroom never opened up at no cost
Same experiences here. QF WP, OWE - bulkhead, extra legroom seats are always chargeable (even post T-48). Have had limited luck getting those seats assigned even at airport. Tried at AU ports, MAA, KUL, PHN, BKK - no luck.

MH staff say those seats are either allocated to someone else, or those seats are chargeable. I can see on EF that the seats are available for selection, for a price of course - so not allocated to someone else... anyways ces't la vie!

To be fair to MH, once, ex-SYD had luck in getting the PE seat (rows 9-11 on the older A330s) without paying anything extra. The check-in agent at SYD said they need to check w/ their supervisor if they can assign the seat for OWE without extra $$.

Personally, I'm now asking if I can get a shadow instead of the bulkhead/extra legroom seats - I find the shadow more valuable than the legroom. ACK that I'm only 5.6''

The days of free economy class seat selection are fast fading, even for top-tier elites at the middle-of-the-road-airlines, like MH, QF etc..
What's driving this nonsense globally is:

- Seat selection fees, parked under 'ancillary revenue', are seen as critical revenue drivers, while giving free seats to status holders is seen as lost revenue.
- Largely driven by economists and consultant-type thinking that don't view airlines as hospitality businesses.

Harvey does not approve of this approach.
