I want to book a flight for my husband and his mother (I'm not travelling) since I have a lot of points. He's already registered as family, but she isn't. I've searched the FAQs high and low but can find no definition of a family member. Do MILs qualify or do I need to transfer my points to my husband and let him do it (fee for transfer: A$35). She isn't QFF yet but we will sign her up. Do we need to register her as living at our address. NB - my surname is different to theirs.

If you go through with the booking process and there will be a dropdown box for relation. Just did a JASA booking and even saw uncle there so it is quite extensive family.

Is a fee payable for family transfer? I always thought it was free

So did I.. My brother transferred points to me a couple of weeks ago and it was few weeks ago.

$35 fee applies of made through the service centre. See the fee schedule for post 4 may fees.

I believe it is still free on-line

Yes family transfers are free. Not sure what that $35 is (is there a fee for doing it by phone instead of online?)

How do Qantas really know anyway? Cant you put her down as aAunt or something? lol

I have upgraded friends and booked flights for a friend putting them down as Cousin i beleive.no one ever questions it

Exactly. I've put people down as cousins - how would they ever know, or be able to prove it wasn't true - I don't think they'd ask for copies of your parents birth certificates and your grandparents, plus your "cousins" parents, as that would be the only way it could be verified.

I've also transferred my points to a 'cousin' who was simply a friend.

Does anyone know any logical reason why Qantas would want to restrict FF point transfers and award bookings to family members?

Otherwise ad they don't actively check/enforce they should drop the charade and open it up.
