Can someone please explain how the fees work on Qantas Classic Awards, and can I pay for these fees with points?

Is it a standard fee per sector? or is just random.

The fees paid in addition to points on a classic award are a combination of taxes, external charges (e.g. Security) and carrier charges, such as the fuel surcharge. This is a pre-determined amount and should be the same for each classic award on the same route in the same booking class. AFAIK no, you can't pay the taxes in points, but if you book an Any Seat Award by phoning up or selecting "view on points" on the booking page, the taxes are included in the points cost, however the points required are usually greater.

Oh, I was told that you can pay in points.

When you book a classic award you have the option to pay the taxes in cash, or in additional points. The number of additional points required varies depending on the amount of cash required.

Either way it's a huge ripoff. Look at my profile.

Found this on the Qantas Classic Award page, could someone please explain the the part highlighted in bold...

For Classic Award flights, taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable in addition to the points required, are subject to change and are quoted at the time of booking. However, Qantas Point levels inclusive of taxes, fees and carrier charges are offered on eligible wholly Australian and New Zealand domestic Classic Awards.

I've never done a Classic Award, only JASA's however I always went with the minimum amount of points & paid cash as IMO you get more value by using the least amount of points.

As Mattg said above, it doesn't appear that you can use all points as there is no slider to use max points & nil cash. I don't know whether it's possible to do over the phone however I thinking it's a waste to go down that road.

Oh, I was told that you can pay in points.

There's a possibility whoever told you that may be confusing that with points & pay which is not booked in an award redemption class (ie P,U,Z or X) but merely just any commercial airfare that you would book on the website eg a Red-e-Deal or a Sale fare.

A comparison of a Classic Award based vs a commercial fare using the points and pay option on QF127 Wed 12 Feb 2014 is as follows:

Classic Award = 90,000 points (one way) plus AUD214.53 in taxes/fees/charges per person

First Class Saver fare using the points & pay option = 790,300 ff points

First Class Saver fare paying cash (no points) = AUD6,376.00

Wouldn't you rather save 700,300 points by only shelling out AUD214.53?

I am wanting to book a Classic Award Business fare from CNS-MEL. It states I need 36,000 points, but when I go to book it adds an extra $79 of fees/taxes, but it states on the QF website ...

Where can I get one of the classic awards that includes the fees?

When you actually make the booking, at the point where it wants you to pay the taxes, it will give you the option to pay in points.

Ignore what the others in this thread have said about P+P or ASAs as neither of those are applicable. The option to pay the +++ on a classic award in points has been available for a LONG time.

But would you really want to use points to pay these extras...

Qantas doesn't value the points at much of a decent rate when redeeming (probably more when they are charging you) so at best you would probably be able to use those extra points more prudently/valuably yourself on another booking, and at worse, as in ozbeachbabes example, Qantas can rip u off in terms of the points they require to cover a ticket with taxes and charges included..
