I’ve literally had 100’s of pie floaters over the years and that is a very poor imitation

Pie floaters have gone up market, maybe. On my first stint of living is SA I recall these gastronomic delights being tinned peas (complete with tinned water) stirred or mashed forming some type of not so good and lumpy soup, the pie was plopped on up side down and topped off with tomato sauce. That is just my hazy memory from 35 years back.
