Apologies for the tardiness of this post but in the past 7 days I've been in Perth, Adelaide (live there), Melbourne, Canberra & Brisbane. Been a tad busy.

I'm hoping that the young turk who was sitting in 1C on the above flight is a member of this forum and gets to read this post. Young fella, you need some lessons in how to travel on an airplane. Sitting in 1C, with your seat fully reclined for the entire flight with your black shoes up on the forward bulkhead (making marks) is not a good look!! I was in 2F with my Director in 2D. Had to get up to go to the loo (and I'm not small) and despite making it abundantly clear to 1C that I couldn't get past - even with my boss standing up - I still had to ask you to put your seat up. Got back to the seat and again I had to ask you to put your seat forward to let me in - despite me making it abundantly clear (Byron Picket would have been proud of my hip and shoulder) that I couldn't get in. I can only hope that you upgraded yourself and that you will not be a regular user of Business Class. I can only imagine what you'd be like in whY.

Rant off - been stewing on this all week. Feel much better now. Everyone have a good day.

It's his right to recline Ikara ;)

It is definitely one of my bugbears - recliners and feet on the bulk head - I seem to get it a lot :( (red my trip reports).

Good to vent here - now you can go on enjoying your next upcoming flights :)

Guessing either the 'turk'y was in 1D or you guys were in 1A/C.

Other than that, you have a good day too ... Cheers :D

Absolutely agree, in fact I don't think I said he couldn't. General attitude and personal demeanour were my main whinges. A little common courtesy when I was getting in and out of my seat would have been appreciated.

Just so that everyone knows - I'm over 60. I have a military background. I am cough about good manners and attitude, but then that's the lot of the Baby Boomer when dealing with Gen X & Y's.

I'm still having a good day and will continue to do so.

JB

You might have missed my point - I want to smack these recliners on the head with my laptop - just because you have rights - it doesnt mean you have to exercise them ;)

Just as well, if we ever ended up on the same flight, you would be several cabins forward or overhead of me... I am definitely a feet on bulk heads kinda person! And I particularly like the airlines that carpet the bulk heads, makes them even more comfortable for said purpose. :D P.S. Always with my shoes off & in full recline!

Go the full recline!

If you're too fat to get out of your seat, lose some weight or, as you did, ask the person to return their seat to the upright position. Sheesh.

Meanwhile, how did you know he was Turkish and how is the recliner's assumed ethnic background relevant/worth mentioning?

Excuse my ignorance - I clearly showed my age when I misunderstood what the Old Turk was getting at.

Hmmm.... I know what I love to do with serial recliners and the recline button.

Now you might understand the despair of the "Baby Boomers". I assume everyone understands what a Baby Boomer is??

I am now assessed as too fat to sit in an aircraft seat and I'm racist! There ain't a racist bone in my body, but I do have large stomach bones! Although my 100Kg's is in proportion with the rest of me - and well kept for a 60 yr old even if I do say so modestly:D

Having stirred the pot nicely on this one, I'll retire and as I'm in 1C tomorrow morning from Brisbane to Adelaide I won't have a recliner in front of me and I won't be putting my feet on the wall. Don't do it at home - don't do it out.

You folks all have a bloody nice day.

JB

IKARA.... (Navy were ya??:D )...

I'm 45.. and feel the same way about manners and propriety........

AND to have someone here NOT know what a "young Turk" is just made me feel considerably older....

I object to being tarred with "Gen X and Gen Y" brush - I think I am just a tad too old for Gen XY and we Gen Xers seemed to get screwed from both sides. We are too young to take advantage of either the 80's boom, our parents wealth (created through land acquisitions when land was cheap) and missed out on having offices when we got to a certain level but also too old to be Hip Gen Yers with their easy going lifestyles.

Also its the Gen Xers who have to manage the Gen Yers in the workplace - can you imagine having to manage someone who has been told from birth how they have choices and only need to do things they enjoy and who educated in a time when respect for authority was deemed to be in appropriate for the classroom and who expect the same "privileges" as people who have been working for 10 years longer than them.

I have to say being Gen X is possibly the worst generation to be (except for the generations that were sent to war and died or starved during the depression) - absolutely nothing going for it.

Born in 1961 I think I am technically a baby Boomer... but with older parents than my peers.. thus a likely more conservative household.. and straight to the Naval College from High School...

Any wonder I like "old fashioned" standards???:D

And no, I don't automatically ascribe to theories about Gen X & Y.. but I deal with a LOT of young teenagers in the course of my work... and SOME of them drive me crazy in short order! (Most of course are fine human beings indeed, just like every other age group)

Trooper - yes I was Navy - and bloody proud of it!

Simongr - go you good thing. Someone else who understands the vagaries of the various generations! I'd love to have a cold beer and a discussion with you on the subject (and I mean that very genuinely) as I have a whole lot of theories about Company performance based on the subject.

Got nicely off the topic of me being miffed by a chronic recliner.

I hope this doesn't sound like a rant, but please don't sterotype.

Ok, I'm definitely Gen Y (unfortunately not even close to gen x  )but I have to say, Gen Y's and Gen X's are sick of being branded as having no manners, being rude and arrogant, party animals, drug addicts and serial recliners. ;) This is sterotypical shenattigans.

I grew up with a Dad who is a BabyBoomer (1947), was in the Air Force and is crazy about discipline, to the extent that when I was little, I used to think I was one of his troops. Having said that, now I'm old enough to appreciate it and I'm pleased I was brought up with that discipline because its got me a lot of things in life. Please just don't sterotype us because we're not all like that.

That's just my say but I have to agree that reclining should only be necessary on a long flight and once the meal has been served and cleared. See, not all Gen Y's are serial recliners. ;)

This is so true !!!
I am sick of the 20 somethings who have worked (as in used to) for us..

They have expected to get the same salary, perks, treatment as us "older" folk in our late 30's who have put in the hard yards!
And I get to be in business class 'cos I used my points.. if you don't have any ... NOT MY PROBLEM !

And they frickin question everything !!!!!
Why this, why that...

And I am NOT going to listen to the whinging about having to work after 5pm/Saturday etc etc.

What the hell is the workforce going to be like in 20 years ?

All managers and no workers...

end of rant.

Nothing to see here, move along people.....

:p :p :p

Agreed IianF, People just need to realise that in general, only hard work brings rewards and admittedly, GenY probably do need to get their act together on this one. I have a feeling what you mentioned is why Gen Y have such trouble maintaining the one job and seem to jump around like yoyo's. Again though, not everyone, but very fair point!
