QF1 - a long flight with no water!

But would it be an appropriate option considering water is much more important for human consumption.

Well, they are using drinking water to flush the toilets. Not that there's much choice there.

Sanitisers aren't quite the preventative they are advertised to be.

Hand sanitisers don't kill as many bugs as soap and water.

Well that's something new that I have learned. I had always thought that normal soap and water was for the purpose of washing away the bugs from the skin and that it did not actually kill them.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

I wonder what is considered big enough of an issue to divert a plane and land at the closest airport?
.

I don't know what the actual regulations are. But on a SYD - LAX flight with QF a few years ago, 5 hours in the water failed.

We diverted to HNL landing at a deserted terminal at 1 or 2 am. The captain made numerous announcements regarding h his conversations about potentially having to disembark the plane to clear customs - as this was our first port in US.

Common sense prevailed and we departed for LAX 2-3 hours later. Landing without an aerobridge gate... bused to terminal .. and lots of missed connections.

I would have preferred no watet

Try lighting a cigarette immediately after using hand sanitizer.
That'll definitely kill any remaining germs.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Annoyingly I've been on two A380s with this issue in the last year, both to LAX, one was around 3 hours in and the other closer to 6 hours in. Thankfully in J both times, but was most unimpressed with the FAs on the first occasion as they got snarky when I alerted them to the problem - they initially refused my request for water to wash my hands!

Both hand sanitisers and soap remove the bacteria, not necessarily kill it, the problem is the sanitisers just remove the oil layer where as soap takes a lot more:

Fighting Cold and Flu Germs -- Microbiologists Find Soap and Water Best for Washing Hands, Removing Germs

Quote from the story:

THE RESULTS: The study showed that after a short exposure time of 10 seconds, nearly all the hand hygiene products reduced 90 percent of bacteria on the hands. But waterless alcohol-based hand wipes only removed about 50 percent of bacteria from the subjects' hands.

Not having a shot at you m10, but that story and research seems a bit silly. 10 seconds of rubbing your hands under running water with soap is better than using waterless alcohol wipes? No kidding!

You don't 'wash' your hands with most hand sanitisers (wipes or gel) - its a rub to contact alcohol with the bacteria etc and therefore kill a bunch of them and the stuff mostly then evaporates off, mostly being alcohol based. Used when water - or sufficient - may not be available, such as when bushwalking, on tour in third world countries or maybe when a plane is short of drinking water!

Hand sanitisers don't kill germs, the alcohol removes the oil layer, just check with the FDA:

FDA: Hand Sanitizers Make False Claims

The aircraft was fixed in DXB, I'll post more later as I'm getting on my connecting flight to GLA.
No issues with the water supply on the DXB-LHR sector.

I'd like to think that the used shower water ends up being re-used for toilet flushing.

Shampoo and soap and any other matter to go via the F shower could cause issues with flushing toilets.

Ah Ladies and Gentlemen this is your Captain Speaking
We have a plumbing failure, are there any plumbers on board, please make yourself known to the flight attendants immediately:D

Would certainly have been even more scandalous for Ralph Fiennes & Co. if QF initiated this shower facility back in the day.. :D:shock:
