QF wouldn't check baggage through with long layover

I'm flying Qantas MEL–SYD–SCL and then, after a 19hr30min layover in SCL, SCL–GIG on LATAM. The flights are all on the same PNR (made as one booking via AmEx), but Qantas didn't allow me to check my bag through to GIG, and didn't provide the boarding pass for the SCL–GIG LATAM flight. The check-in agent directed me to the sales desk, but they couldn't help.

I was under the impression that anything less than 24 hours is a "layover", not a "stopover", and so it should be possible for bags to be checked through. (I know that Oneworld changed its interlining rules, but my understanding was that they don't apply if the flights are all on the same PNR.)

I've been unable to find anything that documents the rule that Qantas has applied. Is it actually a rule, or has Qantas messed up here?

As a general rule, it can depend as much on the airport as the airline. Some airports and airlines only allow 12, or 16 hours to hold bags. Some won't allow overnight. A layover doesn't guarantee your bags can be checked all the way.

The specifics of SCL, and whether or not QF erred here will need to be answered by someone with specific knowledge of SCL and LATAM.

Was the SCL layover overnight?
Some airports have rules about keeping baggage checked at the airport overnight.

As mentioned some airports do not have overnight storage of bags in transit.

I think it varies by airline and airport. I've checked in with bags around 36 hours early in Singapore before.

Doubt the check-in system would've even allowed it, nor even showed it as an option.

Singapore is different and individual airlines can indeed have (prior days) early check in up to three days before if they desire.

Qantas used to allow day prior check-in but now choose to pay for just 12 hours.

Early Check-in

Singapore AIlines allow for up to 24 hours before departure these days, but ISTR them allowing three some years ago.

Well either the Singapore Airlines website is incorrect or the Changi Airport web site is wrong:

I think it might be that both are correct

Singapore Airport offers its own 'early check in service' - a common check in counter that can be used by 23 participating airlines. It allows passengers to check-in up to 24 hours before their departing flight. More details here: Common use early check-in introduced at Changi Airport

Singapore Airlines, at it's own counters, will allow check-in up to 48 hours prior. Although it's confusing as to why anyone would use the 24 hour option if they could use the 48 hour one?

Mentioned a similar issue to the OP in another thread. BNE-HKG on QF, 17 hr layover, HKG-HEL-MAN on AY next day. QF couldn’t tag the bags past HKG, let alone issue boarding passes.

Problem wasn’t the airport as Mrs Pineapple did the same two weeks earlier using CX for BNE-HKG, 16hr layover, AY to MAN with another overnight layover in HEL on the way. CX in BNE checked the bags and issued BPs right through to MAN.

Feedback I got on the earlier thread was that it was probably a system issue, QF system or its compatibility with AY or somesuch.

Cheers skip
