This is just a very little comment saying I received upgrade to business both ways bne-lax.

I am now in Bne. QClub awaiting my domestic flt. and working out round the world iternary in business for next o/s trip. :D

What a way to go.

One surprise I rec'd was no sc with AA on short trip Okla. City to DFW. Seeing as DFW-LAX was only sc 20 in discount economy, the other pts. would be non-existant.
cheers

Well done - I don't think upgrades are quite as hard to get as some people would have you believe!

I take it the next RTW will be a DONE4 so as to guarantee bus class?

What booking class was the Okla. City to DFW flight - indeed, what booking class was your flight DFW to LAX?

Did you travel up front?

I got an op up for my SYD-PER flight on new year's day. My first op up ever! Hopefully this will be the first out of many :D

It might have helped that I had a fully flexible Y ticket, WP+PG status and a fully loaded Y flight though.

Congrats on your upgrade! - op up or points?

I've got another op up AKL-SYD on Monday last week. Travelling with a NS who also got upgraded. Its great to get them - but I never expect them because I know they are few and far between.

Christmas flights are usually the best success IMHO for op ups as not many with status are travelling (particularly the busy Tasman routes).

Just my thoughts.

In 2008 i was 100% successful in my points upgrades and had an unexpected number of Op-Up's, CX and QF. (Even my trip home 2 days ago was from whY to Premium whY)

So yes it is not impossible to get upgrades like everybody seems to think, and some of my flights were even the busy ones, eg Friday evening.

I guess being WP helps a lot.

Lets hope my good luck continues in 2009.

For about 6 months in the early part of 2008 I was getting automatic upgrades about 80% of the time on the Sydney to Perth (and vice versa) route - approximately two return flights per month - then suddenly it stopped. :?: Then in December 2008 it started again, where I got 3/4 flights auto upgraded to J.

Was there anything new implemented within the Qantas system? I see numerous posts about a new seating allocation system, perhaps that was the cause?

I can't say I have ever heard of an auto upgrade on Qantas - on either the old system or the new system. However, December is often a good time to get upgrades as the cabin often is unsold and there is heavy demand at the back of the bus.

I would assume simple revenue management, they over sell whY if J load is low and bump the high status people up. As noted Christmas in the time for it :D

I am happy just to take when i can get it. I never ask, but i am sure it helps if your in the lounge sometimes since its happened a few times i have just been called to the desk for no apparent reason except to ask if they could have my boarding pass back and handed a new one with a smile saying i had been upgraded.

I will say i have had more upgrades in last year and a half as WP/OWE instead of just PG/OWS. But i have also been flying more.

Had zero upgrades in 2008 but thought my upgrade fairy had finally awoken in Cairns last week.
The QF dragon called me to the desk and my hopes rose accordingly, however it was only a request to shift me from an exit row A seat to exit row F.
B*gger!!

You would think I would be aware of all the terminology after a couple of years accessing this site, sorry for confusion.

It was points upgrade both ways. When I looked first thing prior to initial return flt. starting okc, the comments on qf was my request for upgrade had been denied. Disappointed to say the least. so I drowned my sorrows with too much eating the rest of the day.

When I checked into Admirals Club that evening I received the good news.

All my domestic and int'l flt. was in V class. I was in economy internal US flts. but further toward front than rear.

And yes, I am trying to figure out how I can manage business on next rtw :D

I've never thought of getting an op-up being just silver, so have to do the harder way through points or $

had my first UG success last Sat on QF32 SIN-SYD

EF showed a packed flight with only limited spaces available in J & F!

I had requested a points UG a week before hand from Y to PE only to be declined the day before!

However, I was issued with a new ticket at the gate and told that I had been bumped to PE! Checking my points balance later showed no deduction which made me chuckle - QF had the chance to deduct the points however chose to UG me for nothing - cheers QF!

I assume I can thank my OWE status for the bump or perhaps the stars where just aligned in this case?

Another interesting point I noticed with EF in this instance was that I had a Y class ticket for the return leg however EF did not show any Y seats - it went from B straight to W & T......does anybody know if this would have been a factor in my UG from Y to PE?

Congratulations on the op-up!

I had a similar case on Sundays' QF10 SIN-MEL, booked into PE - boarding pass rejected at the gate, handed a new pass for 18B!

In my case I had not listed for an upgrade - the gamut of emotions related to the upgrade process is too much on my poor psyche.

So, as a mere silver status, I enjoyed the QP thanks to Febs for sending me a one-time invitation card, and then an op-up to business on the same flight.

More likely your EXP did the trick.

E/F only shows what the GDS it interrogates returns.

Y class is available for booking. If you specify QF a different default GDS is employed and Y is often not returned.

e.g. Following are two ways E/F shows QF32 on 31st Jan:
Code:
     Specifying QF: RC F4 A3 J9 C9 D9 I7 W3 T3 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 VC SC NC QC OC XC E0
No Airlines Spec'd: R0 F4 A3 J9 C9 D9 W3 T3 Y3 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0

From personal experience, QF are getting later and later at confirming upgrades - espcially when viewing from the QF website. They are possibly implementing their policy of not disclosing the success (or otherwise) of international upgrades until checkin (or 5 hours before flight).
