QF trials new "no tray" meal service in Economy Class

A bit like Jetstar, where if you have a plus package (or had a plus package) with hot meal included, you are just given the foil container with the meal.

Need a bit more details and pictures on how this will look. Seems a bit inconvenient really. Do you only get the meal and dessert and no cheese / salad?

On the plus side pre-ordering a preferred meal in economy sounds great although sounds like a logistical nightmare to serve on board

If this is going to be anything like Jetstar meal service then sadly I see this as another nail in QFs coffin. Why oh why are they moving to the ways of an LCC when QF promote as being a premium airline?

Does this mean that the meal offerings will be reduced ie no, salad, no cheese and biscuits, what about the bread roll given that there is no tray, no way I would want food laid directly onto those tray tables. What about water and juice and butter and condimemts?

How are they going to collect all the rubbish?

Really do need to see more and hear other peoples experience with this, however it seems like yet another stupid attempt at cost cutting........

Reason for pre-ordering is to try and reduce wastage and please more people. I do like the concept however the delivery just doesnt sit well with me at the moment.

I can see that this will take a lot more time and effort and that only means the remains of the meal sitting on the tables for much longer times. And take much longer to get that second drink Grrrrrrrrrr

imagine they have identified the need to reduce the service time given the reduced numbers of crew - minimise the prep time and do the 'assembly' at each seat (ie combine the main and drink plus any entree straight to the pax?

Hmmm. Does anyone have any photos of existing carriers doing the same thing? Not LCCs such as JQ.

Has anyone seen a similar announcement for Domestic (or have I missed the thread on AFF?)

Tonight's 694 - a dinner service - had a box handed out in lieu of the usual tray. No foil dish, a "light and healthy" chicken salad, which in itself I actually enjoyed (especially compared to the sweet and sour of a few weeks ago, which was simply vile.) Gone, too, the bread roll and mini-choc ( which, of late, was a Crispello...a nothing choc if ever there's was one.

Tonight's salad was OK, refreshing, a good light meal, but some initial reaction on my part:

- an unheated dinner is not "dinner"
- OK for summer but not really dinner for winter
- "Jetstar meal"

Regards,

BD

Does sound like a drastic overhaul. I will be flying Qantas again next Friday so will be interesting to see the new catering first hand.

Had the same meal on the same flight on Wednesday. The salad was good but definitely not enough for dinner. I hope QF didn't ditch the hot meals, most of them were not bad at all.

Sadly I can see this resulting in a far messier cabin - I hope QF have factored in the likely additional cleanup costs.

Had the same new "trayless" style on Thursday night. The meal itself was ok (roast beef and salad i think) but one problem was the plastic covering - as with the regular old small square salads that came with the tray meals I would take the plastic lid off then sit the salad on top of the lid then back on the tray. Tried the same with the new trayless meal on Thursday but it was almost impossible to eat as it slid around the tray table. After removing the lid from beneath it seemed to grip better, but then there wasn't a lot of space to sit the lid down, so it got squashed into the seat pocket.

No bread roll, no cheese & crackers, no chocolate etc - just a drink and a box.

So we're going down the "one less olive in the salad" path. Real bottom of the barrel stuff.

Hate tray less meals and Qantas is going down this path it seems of one less olive one less everything .... Hope it's not one less passenger too?

I'm guessing this is how they're going to do the no-tray on intl. You will be handed a 'snack box' type thing which will contain a main and some small entree and dessert/chocolate. I'm guessing you'll get less utensils/condiments and no bread roll.

I can't think how else they can serve a multi-course meal to you at once without a tray.
