Helloworld had the J sale for $4715.13. I booked with QF then did a successful price match. Off to SFO, YVR, SEA, status run to ORD, then a few days in the Napa Valley. SWMBO on a J points redemption they gladly opened up for me.

As a self funded traveller I'd personally do it. Would be happy to take on a challenge to show people how to retain QF plat for around AUD$3.5k.

There's currently what looks like a mistake fare out for AUK-SFO via SYD for as little as ~$715 on a LAN / United combination.

Not that you'd travel to NZ and back to save a couple of hundred but interesting to see another mistake fare show up...

BNE-SIN-BNE flash sale, $599 return on QF/EK, did this trip recently
BNE-LAX return in April for $1200
BNE-SYD-HND, NRT-BNE for $799 return, this is in June
BNE-SYD-SFO return in late July for $999

Redeemed points for the wife, BNE-LAX in J and LAX-SYD in F...and BNE-SYD-HND, NRT-BNE in J
Plus 5 nights in Kyoto at the Westin via starpoints.

I got my flight for $999 return ( from Melbourne) back in November, but this price is still good value.
