QF to launch SYD DFW from 16 May and axe SFO

Oh, and welcome back Red Roo, it's been a while. Still no reply/"dialogue" to the thread that you started????

We're still following it, would rather come back with something of note to discuss. I'll chime back in sometime ;)

Surely some of the decision must be based around freight right? DFW is a *little* bigger in that department that SFO. Will be good to maximise DONEx tickets I'm guessing.

Now if WP & CL get F for J and J for W then it's not so bad. Otherwise I'm cringing at the thought of that distance/duration. That would be the 3rd longest route in the world behind the 2 SQ ones.

Also definitely beats QF20 domestically, have flown that one many times on the 763 and more lately 333. 747 F seat would be much better. Interesting change, should give us all a few more options.

I just looked at Sept departures/Oct returns and the best I could get was about $1200. Then looked at booking SYD-MCO thinking that it would go via DFW direct but all flights were via LAX and DFW or JFK on the return. Weird?

I have a JASA booked SFO - SYD in Oct. How do Qantas generally handle these sorts of changes? What options might be available to me?

It's only $10K J on the direct flights so I'm going to book for the first flight!!

See you there (albeit a few rows behind in Y+ :D)

Just noticed that QF is flogging fares to YYR via DFW for around $1200 ($200ish cheaper than direct to LA alone)

I'm going to do this.

I took the plunge - 34K QFF points and 125 SC's for for $1030 (inc. CC Fine). (MEL-xSYD-DFW-xBNE-MEL)

Was allocated PE seating in WHY.

See you there (albeit a few rows behind in Y+ :D) (pre-assigned 30B which I presume is Y+ at least)

I'm thinking of doing the flight. Will Qantas do anything special on the first flight?

I could do Dallas then the Unclaimed Luggage Centre in Alabama. Roadtrip anyone? I'd fly home in June in my new FF year.

I think there are still a handful ahead of it, according to Wikipedia anyway. I thought it would be the longest oneworld flight but CX's JFK-HKG in the northern winter beats it.

Edit: apologies, Joshua. You're probably referring to longest by miles, rather than duration.

Well I will be happy to guest you into the F Lounge in SYD if you like... I have booked now... am returning on the following Saturday. Then back to London on the Tuesday:(

I suspect they will put you on an AA codeshare to LAX connecting to QF12 or QF108. I have flown several times MEL-SFO return and on the days that QF73/74 did not operate, they always used AA codeshares between LAX and SFO. Just remember, as I got caught out on my last trip, you cannot use QF OLCI when the first leg (ie AA between SFO and LAX) is a code-share flight.

What's the SC's for this route? It doesn't appear to be loaded into Qantas website at the moment.

The Brown Clan (5 of us, my daughter isn't interested in going) will book this.

I am Platinum, any chance we will ALL be offered PE seating on Y tickets? Hmmm that will be a good test. I think they will drag me down :)

The cost for all of us is $5510 ex CBR - BARGAIN ! !

Thanks danielc, it helps to have some idea of what they might offer before I ring them to discuss.

Mileage Monkey indicates 8578 miles which means 50 SCs for discount Y, 200 for J and 300 for F. Nice.

Edit: I meant Great Circle Mapper, as JohnK used, below.

According to Great Circle Mapper SYD-DFW is 8,578 miles so it falls into Zone 9 which is 50 SCs for Discount Economy, 100 SCs for Premium Economy and 200 SCs for Business class.

Not as good as the 65 SCs for Discount Economy, 130 SCs for Premium Economy and 260 SCs for Business for the current SYD-LAX-DFW routing, which is bad news for some (particularly those whose intended destination is DFW)!

I agree with ric_melb, why put in/partly fund a sole F Lounge or a joint F Lounge, when you don't offer that service, would be an expensive exercise to please WP's and CL's. Have we become that accustomed to them (even though they are only available in 2.5 (BNE being the half...lol) ports here in Australia) ???

Exactly, why bother pleasing your WP and CL customers that quite often spend well above the level to re-qualify for their status, leave them in the J lounges instead, makes much more sense, to show them how much you care about them ;)

No reason why one will not be able to still go SYD-LAX-DFW for roughly the same price as the direct. I know which I would choose....

Good point.

The SYD-SFO-DFW option (which I am taking in March) will definitely disappear though (potential Jetstar possibilities aside)! :D
